Scope Rings - What to Choose?

Hi All,

Another dumb question as I try to educate myself in the various parts of the sport.

Do the scope rings needs to match the manufacturer?

I bought an Athlon Neo, and the Athlon rings are $250. I see other rings are available from others at $150 or less.

It will be mounted on a Ruger Precision .22LR

Any suggestions?

No need to match rings with the scope manufacturer. Rings come in basically three sizes to match the diameter of the scope tube, 1 inch, 30mm & 34mm. You need to determine the correct ring height to provide clearance between the scopes objective ring & the rifle barrel. Most options are low, medium or high.

There are lots of choices, my personal favorite are the Burris Signature rings with the nylon inserts.
 
I have had good experience with both the MDT Premier rings and the Hawkins Precision ultralite rings. I think you would be fine with any decent aluminum rings from a reputable manufacturer. Just be sure to buy the correct size for your needs.
 
For a .22 you could probably use zip ties if you could get the scope straight enough! Seriously while I believe in quality mounting hardware, for most .22’s you don’t need $250 rings. That said if your mounting a 30 ounce scope then you may want something decent to support all that weight. The Burris 6 hole extreme tactical rings are pretty darn good especially for a .22 and can be had for under $100 from site sponsors.
 
On a 22 the only concern I have is does it work. I have an Athlon Argos on a 457 V-MTR using some $20-30 rings I had 'extra'. No brand marking 'generic' and they fit on the DIP 30* rail. I don't plan to use the scope as a hand-grip so good to go. I have Vortex Pro Low rings on my 455 and on my B22 @ $100+ each but some of the 'generic' ones on my .223, .308, and x39. None have flown away.
PS - I just saw above post and my Athlon is 30-oz.
 
For 22 it doesn't matter. I run 15$ Fitcos from Amazon on a 900$ scope. I shoot 0.5" with it at 50y.

It's not hard or expensive to machine a 1." bore.

Cabelas has several different brands and models to choose from with a wide variety of price points. Not saying that you necessarily want to buy from them, but you could gain a better idea of some of your options.
 
I run Burris Zee signature rings on my Anschutz.

I like them because its only 2 clamp screws and I can adjust the MOA. No need for 4 or 6 clamping screws for a 22LR.

Thanks for the feedback!

The optic has a 1" diameter tube, so I assume that means I need 1" rings.

Also, how to I determine the ring height? It is based on preference. optic dimensions, or both? The eye piece diameter is 40.64mm (1.6") and the objective lens diameter is 48.26mm (1.9"). Based on a simply chart I found in google images it says I need a high rings (up to 50mm Objective). Does this make sense?

Thanks for the info. The weight of the scope is ~18oz, so its not light, but I wouldn't consider it a heavy one. I will take a look at the Burris.

Thanks. I will do some recon. I find that I often use Cabela's for info, and go somewhere else to purchase. :p

Awesome. I must admit I am a sucker for visuals. I know that I do not need the 4 or 6 clamping screws on a .22, but how nice and meaty does it look on a set-up?!?!

We got a couple that run those anodized aliexpress scope rings, that are way too bulky. Doesn't look that great. Esp when you don't have the rail space for them.

I like the KISS. But this is actually the 3rd set of rings I bought for this gun. First was Talley ultralight rings/bases. I ran out of elevation adjustment and shot left. Bkl rings zeroed the windage but was still shooting low. So why I went with the Burris.

I'll stick with this brand. If you have anything off bore, these can correct them. I have enough scope adjustment for 20Y to 100Y.

I have 25 moa of adjustment. The 20 moa in the rear and 5 in front. Hence why the scope is sloping down.

Ring height - I wish I knew how to do that - I was always focused on making sure was high enough that front bell would not hit barrel - but installing a Leupold VX Freedom 2-7 Rimfire scope onto a BRNO No. 1, the bolt handle hit that eye piece, even though there was lots of clearance at front end. I had used Medium height Warne rings - so swapped out to High Warne rings, and then got the bolt handle clearance that was needed - unfortunately that leaves me with a set of Warne Medium height rings, for 16 mm dovetail, not being used.

And for sure is much difference among people for preference - I happen to prefer to have the scope as low as I can install it - others want a much higher sight line. Might also go to the height of top of comb, versus bore line - why many ex-military rifle stocks (Mausers, P14, Lee Enfields, etc.) not usually terrific with scopes installed - sight line is too high for the comb - so end up with "chin weld" or "jaw weld", instead of "cheek weld" for some people.

And times change - at the time (Feb 2021), I paid "through the nose" to get Medium height Warne rings from Great Britain- was NONE available in Canada - but there are suppliers in Canada, now, with them in stock, for about 1/2 price what I paid back then. And a discovery after many installations - is no "standard" among makers what is "low", "medium", or "high" height - one brand to another. I have taken to look on Brownell's web site - they often give an actual dimension from top of scope base to the underside of scope body, or to the centre of scope body - so not really relying on the "words" that describe height - likely want to know the actual dimensions.

Wow, she's a beauty! Thanks for sharing. Are those 2 or 4 hole rings, can't quite tell from the photo.

Also, have you heard of Weaver or West Hunter rings? They are on Amazon, and for about $50-$75. Figure its from China / AliBaba. They have excellent reviews, but I do not always take Amazon reviews at face-value.
