Scope takes the "fun" away? Irons funner? Red dot?

My black rifle life started with a 9mm NR CX4 with a red dot. It was awesome.

Then got into a NR XCR in 556, with a Leupold mark AR 1.5-4 scope. Its awesome, and love being able to quickly turn the dial and smack gongs at 300 meters with ease.

But since getting a S&W M&P sport 2 with irons, the XCR is less fun. Grabbing the AR with irons and blasting away free hand just seems so much funner. Although typically only 100 meters.

Is it that the AR is just lighter, shorter, more nimble than the XCR? (yes no optics on the AR makes it lighter too, but the base platform is lighter and thinner)
Or is it than the scope(limited field of view, limiting follow up shots) just takes away from the free hand fun blast away?

I think its both. For that reason I'm leaning with more of a 0 magnification red dot style sight for the field of view follow up shots. But I also want to reach out to 300...

Thoughts on the red dots sight with flip up magnifier? Yeah I realise it will add extra weight with both devices.
I love the EOtech looking reticle, a dot for precision and a outer round circle for quick shot. Likewise the size difference between the 2 to use as a form of BDC.

Yeah I think people should start shooting with red dots, because it's pretty easy. Once they've mastered that and understand the basics, then move on to irons. Irons are interesting because they're more difficult to use but can be VERY precise.

Iron sites more precise than a scope? Please clarify

Lol no one said this.

I find shooting offhand at long-ish distances with a scope to be equally fun as shooting shorter distances with irons. But I'm with ya, I do feel much more satisfied when I can make a shot with irons vs with a scope.

TR shooters shoot 1000m with no scope. Then f-class shoots near the same rifle with a scope on it at the same 1000m

Its all in what you wish to do. My eyes arnt very good so over 100m i want a scope, under 100m ill take iron sights over a scope any day of the week.

More fun. Funner isn't a word...

I suck with iron sights. Probably because I have an Enfield and a sks which both have crappy iron sights... So I like optical sights.

Im going to get a 22 with a peep sight in the future, maybe that'll be better...

Iron sights are just fine........ until you get older. No fun when the front sight becomes a fuzzy blur and the target an even more indistinct blur.

Auggie D.

I find peep sights the funnest, fastest and most intuitive of all, open irons are a blur for me, red dots and scope I fidn do take some of the fun out of it aswell

Definitely recommend to younger shooters to shoot irons and positional shooting (and action shooting) and enjoy it while you can.

Learning to shoot with irons only is essential. I like it a lot. It's challenging, but this is the stuff of great shots.

Don't get me wrong, I love telescopes too.

I learned on iron sights and that’s what I’m still most comfortable with .... I should start using a scope more often as I keep reading about people’s eyes when they shoot and get older.

I’ve never used a red dot .... I’ll have to learn about those too lol.

When you shoot with irons and you’re cheap, you tend to buy another rifle before buying any optics.

Depends on what you want to do... at longer distances, running Irons may be more rewarding but ymmv.

Myself, if accuracy is too easy, I chose a smaller target or focus more on speed. Try popping a looney sized target at 200 yards with irons, you may pull your hair out at the difficulty, but with a scope it may be fun.

I've been sucked into buying thousands of dollars of optics in my life and finally come to the point where I only have iron sights. I just enjoy them so much more.

If I had a hunting rifle then maybe but the closest I'll ever get to that is a ptr91 or FAL.
