Help me out here please, I discovered a problem with my new rifle/ scope setup. the problem is that the spent case will not eject properly, it tries to but hits the bottom of the scope and falls back down.
setup is:
Sako 85 finnlight 3006
scope is leupold vx5hd 3-15x44
rings are sako optilocks xtra low 30mm

there is already plenty of clearance between objective and barrel so i didn't want to go higher but it looks like I may have to?? Id like some solid info before I start trying different ring heights at over 100$ per set. thanks for any insight

I haven’t dealt with it personally, but when I was looking for a Sako 375 the ejection difficulties with a scope came up. Maybe google it also to get some ideas?

A friend has a vx3i 4-14x40 1" tube mounted on the same rifle in low Leupold Ringmounts. Has the same ejection problems your having.

He had a 1" tube Zeiss on it before and had no issues.

I recently purchased a Finnlight 85L and while doing scope mount research to mount VX-3 3.5-10x40mm was recommended by Stoeger Canada, Sako dealer, to use mediums for that exact reason.

From them;
"The Sako 85 rifles have a different design than most rifles made and manufactured in North America, and as such one needs to take these design differences into account when setting their rifle up out of the box.
Because the Sako rifles utilize an open top ejection port and manual ejector system, one needs to be mindful about how low they mount their optic over the ejection port to avoid placing an obstruction within the natural path of ejection.
Due to the location and design of the ejector assembly, this system does tend to eject spent cases at a slightly higher angle than the spring and plunger system found in most North American rifle designs.
We always recommend the use of the Opti-lock Medium ring and base combo for calibers 270 and above, as this will reduce the potential for any issues with ejection."

Best solution and it is what I did when encountering the same issue is ditch the 85 and buy a Kimber Montana..problem solved....:)

That's some fuced up sh!t.
So the only answer is to mount your scope about 3/4 inches above the barrel.
And would that still be enough?

On the bright side, you could put a set of open sights on and use a set of see through rings...

dang I wish I would of known this about sako, it never even occurred to me that this could be an issue, the dude at the cabelas abbotsford gun counter said "go with the x-low's and you will be fine" .
I guess ill try some mediums and see if this fixes it.. Ya these leupold vx5 are fat across the bottom so could be part of the issue but aside from that I love the scope

My 85 was doing the same with a 1 inch Leupold ... I heard about this problem so I took a spent case to the store when I was buying it...:)

so I called cabelas and asked about the problem and the guy said I was the second person this week to call with the exact same issue!. rounds are being ejected strait up into the scope instead of out at an angle. Of course cabelas will not help with warranty so I have reached out to stoeger canada to see if they have an ejector upgrade or some other solution,
**mods feel free to move this to gunsmithing or wherever, turns out it does not appear to be a scope or scope height related issue .

It's not a Sako thing, it's a 3 lug thing.

Since there are 3 lugs, the ejection angle is higher than a 2 lug bolt.

Reliable gun tells me the only fix is higher rings

You might want to look into some sort of cheek piece attachment, or visit a hobby shop like Michaels and get so foam to build up the cheek a bit.

Cover one side with 2 face carpet tap and cut out your pattern, then peel and stick.

Couple of Sakos I have I had to go with medium height rings and a scope with a 1" tube and low turret caps.

Honestly, I like the Sako rifles but my next purchase was a Winchester Model 70 and I have been just as (or maybe more) happy with it.

Wrong scope, no worries time to buy another scope, then you will have that scope lying around and you can’t have that so you will need another rifle.

Has anyone ever installed a plunger ejector in a Sako 85? The A7 on the left, ejects really well with extra low rings, the 85 on the right...
