Scope?

I just picked up a Browning X Bolt Stainless Stalker in .300 win mag.

What scope should I pair with this?

I want to spend under $1000 and have something for all around hunting.

First idea was a Zeiss conquest 4.5-14x50 with the RZ 800 reticle.

Any other suggestions?
 
But as long as you're already here, I love my Bushnell 6500 in 2.5x-16x 42 with the DOA 600 reticle, though if I had to do it again, I'd wait and get the 50mm objective.
 
Your choice of scope is contingent on the type of hunting you do and the typical ranges expected. Many folk buy far too much scope for average hunting situations.

While a BIG X HUGE X 50 Hubble scope might look the cool ticket on a field rifle, the fact of the matter is that the far majority will benefit from a smaller, lower powered scope that is quite a bit lighter and will not ruin the proper handling characteristics of your rifle. A good quality 2x7, 2x5x8, 3x9 etc gives up nothing for 99% of most hunting and will be a scope used and appreciated for years.
 
Take a look at the Redfield line -- I have two 3X9's and am happy as a clam with them. Good optics and decent price and the warranty is tops.

I agree, and that's exactly why I decided on the 2.5x-16x At 2.5x, it's got a great big exit pupil, and it's darn fast to sight through, and if a rare, long shot presents itself, I'll have the time to dial it up.
 
I'm a big fan of Leupold scopes, though I've only owned them and Bushnell. X2 on vxII 2-7, it's an outstanding scope - get one with the long range reticle if you plan on some farther out shots and you're well prepared.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Don't loose sight of what the primary advantage a scope has over iron sights. That advantage is that the aiming point and target are on the same focal plane, that is they are in simultaneous focus while with irons you have to shift your focus between front sight and target (aperture sights) or between rear sight, front sight, and the target (open sights). The cartridge you chose would suggest you intend to hunt big game, but you only need sufficient magnification in order to see the animal. Since big game is, well big, it doesn't require as much magnification to allow you to see it as would say a prairie dog over the same range. The down side of high magnification is two fold, first it narrows the field of view, so it takes longer to get on target and in some cases you might miss an opportunity because you got lost in your scope. Secondly it increases your apparent wobble on the target which is distracting to making a good shot.

The idea that you gain versatility by choosing a high powered variable over a low fixed power or a low variable power scope might have some credence mounted on a varmint/deer rifle class rifle, but a .300 magnum doesn't really qualify as that. Big game hunting can be arduous, and the rifle tends to get bumped around a fair bit, a high power variable by necessity is physically larger than it low powered counterpart, has to be mounted higher above the bore due to it large objective, and is therefore more prone to damage through rough handling.

If it was me, I'd be looking for a 1.5-5X, a 1.75-6X or a 2-7X. Now these scopes are short enough that they might pose a mounting issue on some rifles, but in most cases this is easily resolved through the selection of a good quality extension ring. Another issue that the high power variable has is that when adjusted at the high end of the power ring, the eye relief is shortened considerably and it becomes quite easy to get banged in the eye brow by the ocular when the rifle recoils. Be sure to choose a scope with generous eye relief on hard kicking rifles.

That is the scope that I wil placing on my new rifle this year. Zeiss is a great choice that offers fantastic optics!

I talked to a dealer here in NB yesterday that didn't bother ordering Vortex this year as they can't seem to supply him with any product. Not sure what it's like elsewhere in Canada.

I saw a Leupold LPS 2.5 gto 10x on the EE boards $895 ? with leupolds warranty you couldn,t go wrong.They used to sell new for $1100 very fine optic.
I had a chance to use one of these scopes last fall

There is no finer scope than this but price is wild over 2k and it has more field of view at 100 yards than a leupold 2.5 To 8x

I think the one you suggested would be great or a comparable Leupold. Try and do a side by side in a store and get the one with the better optics.
I think optics are a presonal thing and just because someone on here says one is better, its your eyes so go with the one that looks clearer yo you. They are both great quality it's which one you see better with. Cheers Ross ps I have 2 of each and one Sightron and it is great to.

Doesn't seem to be a problem here in the Ottawa valley. My dealer is going through them like crazy. Just picked up a Viper in 6.5-20x44 for my 22-250. $449 and I love it. Crystal clear on full power.
