Scoped Marlin 336W is 499.99- why buy used?

I found myself at...let's say a big box store in Vaughan a week or two ago. All the guns have trigger locks, so you can't even 'feel' the actions- not an ideal way to shop....

In any case, I looked at a scoped 336W for 499+ taxes... and there may be a $35 rebate too...

I'd certainly prefer to support a smaller retailer, but gosh...At that price, nor I could hardly justify the effort associated with looking for a used one. Even if I didn't WANT a scope, it seems like a deal.

What I'd REALLY like is a Winchester 94.... even a newer AE model... but this is brand new for possibly no more...
 
Do what i did. I cashed in all of my points saved from gas purchases and bought gift cards to said big box store. My Marlin 336w cost me $189 out the door. They even gave me paperwork to get another $35 mail in rebate. It took seven years to get enough points to do this.

now THERE'S an interesting strategy! and foolishly i've been pooling points with the wife on HER loyalty cards....:bangHead:

on the other hand, she let me use the citibank points on a motorcycle- covered more than 1/2 of a crf230l. :)

What does the feel of the action have to do with anything?

I have spent too much time at WSS in Grande Prairie and I see quite a few people get hung up on the smoothness of the actions. They have to "gently" work the action back and forth and then usually start to complain.

First, its a new gun. Gonna need some time to work in.

When you shoot that gun, are you gonna "gently" throw the bolt or lever?

If it is smooth and tight, will it function when it gets dirty after lots of shooting or time in the bush?

Never had the nerve to ask the guys looking at the counter and don't want to hi jack a sales guys sale.

Why would you buy a new one for $499 when you can buy a used one on EE for $600? Oh, and the used one "only has 50 rounds through it".
 
My axiom for .30-30 lever rifles....

Scoped = Marlin.

Peep, tang or iron sites = Winchester

Here I am at my pickiest best!
Peep sights ARE iron sights. Sights come down to two classes, iron or glass.
That sight near the rear of the barrel, that rifles often come equipped with, is an "open" sight.
When a shooting match is advertised as, "Iron sights only," it still means, of course, that aperature sights can be used.
There, I told you I was going to be picky!

well struff55, you'd buy one for quick shooting in close brush, for cowboy action shooting, for fun, or possible cause you like how they look. Same reason as buying an SKS/ DA Outlaw/ Semi auto trap gun or whatever else someone might not like.
I'd never buy one of those "green or black" rifles, but I'm not over in that forum talkin smack.

sorry for the name calling, but the opinion stands.
