Scoped my Merkel Double 470 NE....Photos Up !!!!

Good to see we all got back on track
I glad to see someone had more guts than I to D&T there Merkle, and it worked out!
When I ordered my model 240 SXS Cape gun ,mount with Leopold scope mounted by factory, a $3500 option!!!!!!
And there is no real worries about regulating a rifle and shotgun barrel!
But tell the truth, did the first hole drilled hurt?
Great thread, now to make plans for my new Talley Style mount!
Cheers Dale Z

There was certainly some trepidation and hesitation but I finally grabbed the mill handle and pulled 'er down until the bit started to cut, and then she was "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead" I thought the worst that could happen would be 4 #8 screw fillers in the rib and that wouldn't look that bad.........really.

All the talk of pudding aside, that mount turned out really nicely...better than I expected. And Hoyt must giggle seeing a piece designed for an H&R resting atop a Merkel!

The mount was $1500 Canadian, and the price of an plain Jane Leoplold VIII 1x4x30mm scope was just over $2000!!! (Couldn't buy one here for $700 retail in 2009 and send it over , they have high tax on luxurie items I was told and that's what the scope retailed there?)
After seeing this thread I took out my Merkle 9.3x74R/20 gauge and fired 2 shots at 100 yards and shot just under 2" group standing , with Norma 232 Vulcan factory ammo. Not my best shooting with this gun, shot clover leaf groups off the bench at 80 yards were it is regulated to!
The one thing I noticed was that I think the rib on my Merkle model 240 is wider that your 470 double? (Could you tell me the width of the rib on your 470?)
Great thread! And the mount looks great on your working double! People tend to forget these guns are to be used, Merkles are not rich men's show pieces that never see the woods, deserts, mountains or Savana's! Don't get me wrong these are precision built guns that take time to build, I had my shotgun barrel measured by my friend who is a master machinist, as I am going to have a 28gauge tube fitted by Briley and they needed to know the inside measurement . My friend was amazed how straight an concentric the bore was and how well made this gun was made! He was really impressed how much work went into this one set of barrels!
Ardent do you have pictures of the factory mounts you have, that you can share with us?
Thanks again Dale Z!

This is a great thread and I love the Talley/Merkel setup. I've toyed with buying a Merkel double, to tell the truth, one of the things that has kept me away was the optic mounts. Sounds funny, but I just don't understand how a company can build a solid/accurate/dependable double rifle for 6000$, but need to charge 1500 for a scope base/ring combo. Just doesn't seem right

Thanks for measuring your rib for me!
My rib measures .505" from chamber and slightly narrows towards the muzzle. Also my rib flares out from the top of rib to were it meets the barrels dramatically.
I think the H&R mount wouldn't work for my gun, but it gives me a good idea how to layout and mill a base that will straddle the rib.
Thank you Sir!!!
And a thanks to Ardent for the mount pictures!
Cheers Dale Z!

Don't be silly...they're not charging $1500 for a scope base and rings.

They're charging $1500 for the rings alone!!! :runaway: And, according to Wolverine, there is still some machine work and gunsmithing which will probably be necessary as well.

God knows what they would want to install the bases on the rifle if it didn't already have them.

No wonder them fore-inn furs arr so s'pensive.
They gots gewgle-few and see whut us North 'Merikan folk arr willing to pay for, for, well for chit.
S'pozible income they can add up presto.

Ouch,.

Well that's just me and my ultra-short attention span - no patience to read the lead-in, let's get straight to the end. I should have known someone on here would be better read than I - and faster on the uptake!!!

I don't have the patience to read long threads either...

But, that impatience has resulted in my posting some redundant and assinine things...
