Scoped my Merkel Double 470 NE....Photos Up !!!!

Damn good rig!
Those Merkels have just an awesome sense of simplistic beauty in their craftsmanship. Elegant and simple lines not to fancy but good quality. Gorgeous rifle. Hope you take a fine tusker with it

Btw. With the scope removed how are the original sights? Are they still clearly visible or partly obscured?

BB, The sights are totally usable with the scope off, bottom of sight base is blocked, but all three blades are usable with no noticeable interference what so ever.

Gotta love big bores, they all shoot well........three rights under an inch and three lefts under an inch at 50 mtrs.......gotta love 'em.

Looks good ,good to see the repeatable point of aim .Scope doesn't look out of place on the merkel either

And thanks to you Pete for the help in making the base, it works flawlessly.......as you can well see.

And that's without any special torque driver, just a 27 Torx driver and alternating front to back, snug, tight and then real tight.

I know, I know..........I can still use the irons, but it is getting slower and more difficult each year now. The scope brings me back to instant target acquisition and a clear, in focus sighting picture on a single focal plane. It increases my confidence in my ability to effectively use this rifle on dangerous game 100%..........so screw the aesthetics and bring on the f**king elephants.......

That is signature line material! LMAO! :)

Beautiful, clean job, nicely done. Compared to the over-engineered mess that Merkel normally likes to see being used for QD rings on their doubles, this is a breath of fresh air.

I have a small-frame Merkel double that I got used, and some previous owner had drilled and tapped it and mounted a Weaver base, right on top of the EAW bases that it wore from the factory. I casually inquired at Wolverine about the price of a set of EAW rings to fit the original bases, which were still accessible and useable. Price...for just the rings...was north of $1500! To add insult to injury, there would still be some custom machining/gunsmithing needed to make them work perfectly.

Weavers it is! :)

So, you are saying the Talleys are low quality?
I believe you touched on some quality issues earlier in one of your own posts, unless you do not consider the finish and asthetic issues you noted as a low "quality" issue as I do.

Pics are coming gentlemen, pics are coming.................As an aside I am interested in opinions on the Talley set up. I have never before used Talley rings or bases as I do not care for the "Iroquois" look with the protrusion and screws on the top, however they are made of steel and the rings sit down into a seat in the 1 piece base, which should be strong as hell and should not move under recoil. They are also held together with 4 good stout screws per ring and have plenty of bearing surface on the scope tube. Aesthetics aside they appear to be a strong set up and very well made, which they should be given the pricing.

Brian.........The only thing I said was, that I was not crazy about the top screw set up, which is a purely aesthetic thing. The quality of the fit and finish seems top notch and the performance is outstanding. I have seen other extremely high quality things in my life that I didn't care for the aesthetics of, the grill on the Bugatti Veron comes to mind immediately............aesthetics do not necessarily determine quality. Given the performance the Talley set up just gave during initial sight in and subsequent on/off testing, I can tell you I'm warming up real fast to the appearance.............And let's face it, it's a Merkel, a working double, not a Holland & Holland Royal c/w hand detachable sidelocks.

The levers won't work bearkilr, too close to the barrels.............all I need do is carry the little Torx L wrench in my pocket for QD when essential.

OMG bearkilr, is that almost a compliment?

I used google foo and looked at different types of bases and the set up on yours with the scope removed is the most un noticeable ,cleanest on the rib and you tested it for return to zero which also worked . I still consider it a win even with a torx in the pocket IF the scope ever has to come off

As was stated before it is a working double rifle with practical features now with one more feature :)
