Scoping an SKS - Recommendations needed

My project SKS is now in need of some glass. I want to stay mostly Russian styled so am opting for the side mount type. I'm stuck between a POSP 4x and 6x. Both are the same price so i'm leaning towards higher magnification however if I stay at 4x I can participate in service rifle shoots.

Any suggestions on which way I should go?

Edit : also looking at feedback on pu scope as a viable option. I really like that look

Ill chip in for the PU scope having recently got one.
The PU scope is a well made piece of glass, but as it's a reproduction of ww2 tech

keep this in mind;
1. clicks move the whole reticle, so it's possible to have your aim-point squished off to one side or the other if your mount isnt perfectly square.
2. TINY! The sight picture suffers from a teeny tiny scope.
 
4x is the norm for the period when the SKS was in service and still seems to be in the squad designated marksman role. It will never be a tack driver anyway.

I second the PU though. Looks great and it is the most correct because the only scoped SKS rifles ever sold were late 1980s imports into the U.S. That had a modified PU mount / base and sometimes PU scopes. It's a stretch but it was the only one. Chinese Norinco exported rifles.

Thanks Derr. Couple questions. Did you mount it yourself? Or have it done by a gunsmith. Second, did you have to flatten the scope mount as most mosins are a round receiver vs the flat on the SKS?
 
I have a Vomz Pilad 1.2 - 6x scope on one of mine, and really like it. Good clear glass.

Dialed down, it's a borderline unlimited eye relief reflex scope, good for snap shots at short ranges.

They also make a 1 - 4x, which would keep you legit for service rifle competitions.
 
Im in the progress of mounting a 3-9x24mm PO from west rifle onto mine... ive have the 6x36 PO from westrifle as well, it looks good on an SKS.

The 6x36 ... and NO the "c" clamp in the pictures does not hold zero lol

the POSP / PSO / PO side rail scopes are awesome man ! forget the PU scopes , there soooo 1940's lol
 
PU base from Mosin will install on SKS without any modification to the mount. Use quality drill to dril SKS. Mosin side wall is soft like butter compare to SKS. When you use Mosin sniper mount on an SKS use only two screws no need to drive pins. Secure the screws by pinning them with metal pointer/marker. Please remember to cut at least 2 - 3mm of wood more for the mount so rifle will not crack the stock during firing

Post #11 (top of the page) - I've since taken the bayo off (still have the parts and easy to re-attach) to save on weight for bush carry (ounces add to pounds add to pain). Great little truck/bush gun.

Couple more pics. The second pic is of the rifle doing its job. I need to lay that rifle out one day and give it a proper photo shoot. Head turner at the range, and with the action shimmed I can get under 3" groups consistently with either commercial hunting ammo or surplus.

I would go with the POSP 4x. 4x is good enough magnification for the SKS. When you need to take a quick shot you always have the irons. Also, you can still use stripper clips.
