Hey folks

Well, I'm going to be online doing some major research now!

Just aquired (among others) a Steyr M95, and a K98! The Steyr looks to be in pretty damn good shape, and the K98 has had the wood chopped, and one Eagle peened out.

Anyways, Just wanted to share! I'm pretty stoked to learn about these guns. Hopefully I can get new wood for the K98. The barrel looks un cut. The Steyr came w/ 5 rounds of ammo. All from 1938/39 with the nazi eagle's on em. Pretty cool!

All matching numbers, except the bottom of the mag... Has a number crossed over, and then the other number stamped into it... So I'm guessing a refurb at some point?

How hard is it to find wood for these? I've always wanted one, and can't wait to restore it! (And find a bayonet!)

How much do these guns roughly cost? (I know.... I know...)

All matching, except the stock. Has numbers crossed out. Definatly an interesting gun! From what I've been able to fine, ammo is scarce! I reload, so I'm not too worried.

The Mauser will make back into a really nice milsurp, lookin' good and most enviable.

The Steyr is a nice find, a rifle which gets little respect but which made huge chunks of history in WW2, WW1, Second Balkan War, First Balkan War and another in Chilean hands. The conversion to 8x56R was done in the early 1930s. These were the official rifle of Austria, Hungary and Bulgaria in both World Wars and large numbers of them were used by other countries on both sides. Yours is Austrian.

Your ammo is Austrian-made after the Anschluss, of course. Bulgarian ammo also sometimes surfaces for these; it is marked with a standing-up lion which looks like a dancing bear. BTW, the clip loads from the bottom and you lay the bottom round flat against the clip, then the next round on top of that and so forth; top round has to go in from the front. The rims line up by themselves but they do not overlap except as a sort of 'step-ladder'. Do them like this and it will feed very nicely. Prvi Partizan makes this round now, but I don't know if it is sold in Canada. Trade Ex has brass and the correct 330"-208 grain slugs, Lee makes a .329-205 mould that you use with a gas-check: instant 208 grains! I just got a bag of brass from there but slugs have to wait for the next pension cheque.

IS, the bullet diameter on the 8x56 rounds is .329. Hornady, and Privi, made a special run of bullets. Graf, made up some Boxer primed brass. With good bullets, they are very accurate little carbines.

I got some ammo with the mauser, so I'll keep that brass, and I'll be keeping my eyes open for more.

Nice Steyr, I am currently in Munich right now for the Oktoberfest, and I paid a visit to Salzsburg Austria. I found out some history about the M 95 rifle and its variants during the various campaigns, and now I'd like to get my hands on one!
 
Nice rifles. I like K98k's the most. Yours was made at Bysterica, Czechoslovakia in 1944. This was a satellite of Waffenwerke Brunn(Brno). I just got a stock, original cleaning rod and original sight hood for my sportered 42 code Mauser. A guy in Holland sells this stuff and I was pleased with my stuff. All for $280 US delivered. You can google K98 stocks and his website pops up. You can examine photos of all his stocks, walnut and laminated both(yours is laminated as you probably know), they are from Norwegian capture WW2 MAUSERS. They come with matching bands and buttplates and you should pick one with WaA 63 stamped on the bands which is appropriate for DOT/DOU rifles, I think.

Dosing, I don't know about the prettiest, but it does look different! I really like the straight pull.... Can't wait to shoot it.
