Scout Gun Optics

im heading down to Edmonton this month so im gonna hit Cabela's and P-D and MilArm and see if i can compare the Burris and the Luep side by side and pick up whichever one looks better (looks as in look through, not LCF ((look cool factor))

what i am stuck on is if i should mount it on some medium height rings that have openings under them so i can use the stock irons if i need to or if i should just get some quick release rings and pop the scope off if i need too.

im just on the fence about taking a optic off then putting it back on and 'hoping' that its still spot on.

i did notice that the runger scout has kind of a trough in the picatinny rail that looks like it made so you can see under the optics.
ill go snap a quick pic and post it so you guys can see what im talking about.

so youll notice (or i hope you can from the pic's) that there is a trough cut in the picatinny so you can see through the peep site all the way down to the front blade site.

so, get a ring base that is arced up or quick release?
i think id feel more comfortable with being able to look under the optics but not sure....

id love to get some near mounts for it, but they dont help me with my want of being able to see UNDER the rings.
or being able to pull the rings off in 2 seconds should the need arise.

i was chatting with them back in january but they dont have any peek through rings.

Well I am heart broken.

I've been waiting for months for my trip down south to Edmonton and I'm finally down here, went and hit MilArm and P&D and cabela's and not one of them had either a Burris nor luep scout scope in stock!!!

They all gave me the song and dance about how they could order it in for me, but that does absolutely nothing for me wanting to actually LOOK through them and test them out before I buy one.

So very disappointed. All this wait and then getting away from the wife for the afternoon and having money in my pocket and I'm left heart broken at the alter.

*sigh*

Evening.

Im looking for some info on Scout Gun Optics.
i currently have a Ruger Scout (left handed!) and i have been shooting it with the iron sites since i got it.

but i am curious about trying this relaxed eye relief forward mounted scope stuff that everyone talks about (good or bad).

so when i did some looking around i found 2 'scout scopes' on the market that seem to be made for this purpose.

the Burris lists 2 scout scopes, the 2.75X Scout and the 2x-7x-32mm for around $300.
and Leupold lists the FX-II 2.5x28 mm Scout Scope for around $300

those 2 look to be the entry level scopes for scout rifles.
anyone have either of those.
any pro's or con's for either of them?

OR...... do people go with something a little more new like a Red Dot Reflex sight like the Burris Fastfire II?
or can you see through those effectively if they are forward mounted?

Well, I have them both. The Burris failed once and had the reticles realigned at the Savvy Optics repair facility in Greely Colorado. That stellar repair work (and two week turnaround) is sadly no longer available since 2007. Burris optics in need of repair, now have to go to England or Finland for Canadian clients now.
I replaced the Burris with the similar scout scope from Leupold. It sits on my "Tanker Garand" copy in 308. I've never had any problems of any kind at all, with the 2.5x28mm Power Leupold Scout Scope.

Edit: If you strive to stretch the barrel of your nice little Ruger, you'll appreciate the magnification and wish for more. You are hamstringing yourself with any kind of conventional red dot and zero magnification IMO. But because of the eye relief for focus, it's pretty much impossible to get high magnification as your aiming eye has to get closer to the eyepiece to maintain an unobstructed FOV and focus. I tried this out with a 2-7 power handgun scope once. As you turn up the optical power your face creeps forward and you loose your cheekweld. Even more so disturbing was the ejected 308 cartridges and en bloc clip was dangerously close to my eyeball. The highest power I could get to safely, was 6 magnification.
The Leupold 2.5 was quickly remounted and there it sits.

Made an experiment with my brand new Steyr Scout 308, i would call it the half scout, mentionned by a member, it is a 6500 6 inch eye relief 1.25X8X32.... On 1.25X both eyes are open.... On 8X it is shot the traditionnal way for LR accuracy, just got to shoot 40 rounds this morning and it work just perfect... JP.

I have the leupold FX-II with leupold quick detach rings on my scout rifle. I've been very happy with this set up, it only takes a few seconds to remove, and holds zero perfectly when re-attached.

Sorry to hear you couldnt find one, you may just have to order it. It's how I got mine, I ordered it at my local Canadian ma-facker. Maybe yours can too.

AIM Scout 2-7x42mm (30mm tube) cost about $200. That's what I put on my Ruger Scout rifle, and I've had no problems with it. I really wanted the Leupold Scout Scope in 1.5-5x but that was only produced the first year the Ruger Scout rifle came out. You'd have better luck finding rocking-horse sh!t. I am build a Mosin Nagant into an Archangel stock and I want to find another one. I was hoping to find the supplier on this thread, but I'll keep searching and post back if I find it...

PS: My scout scope is mounted on Leupold QWR quick-release mounts (tooless) so the iron sights are only a few seconds away if the scope gets broken, fogs up etc... But I have never needed to ditch the scope, as it has been reliable so far.

We have the Docter Red Dots in stock right now and they are also on sale.

It's located here on the website.

It also uses any mounts that the Burris Fastfire does.

Also if you're unsure about it here's what I'd suggest since it sounds like you have to drive for a bit to reach a store -> If you do want to look through the Docter RDS place your order online with us. We won't process it but will ship it out to you. If you like it and decide to keep it, we will charge you then. If you don't like it, just ship it back to us. That way you only cost is the shipping back to us if you don't like it.
