Scout rifle - 4x scope or 2-7x scope?

Why not just get a 2-7 variable scout scope and then hit the range and see how far you can hit an 8 inch paper plate with it?
At least that way you will be able to play with different magnification and see how it effects your field of view and ability to hold on target from field positions.

Might be worth changing your wanted to buy post as well since 4-12X scout scopes is not an option.

With your good eye sight , I still think you will be fine hunting out to the ranges that most people shoot large animals with just the peep sights of your Savage scout.

That's another reason people are suggesting a fixed 2.5 power scope, it will let you shoot out too 250 yards as if it was only 100 yards. Plenty of power for shooting at typical hunting ranges.

Are you still considering a sub $100 scope?
Have you had a chance to shoot your rifle yet with the Peeps?

Yea I am going to try ... It will have to do for a year, like I said, if it functions I'm good. I've never looked thru a expensive scope so I won't know the difference ;)
 
With young sharp eyes and good shooting technique you will be able to hit what ever you can rest the bead on while shooting with the stock peep sights.
I've shot a 1 inch group at 100 yards with a savage scout and the stock peep sights. They work.

Just go on scopes and ammo website and buy the Ncstar 2.5 for 59$ + tax/shipping. Its the cheapest Ive found. If you don't like it sell it. A expensive scope you would not see sealant in the sight picture. Remember you got Irons if it fails.
 
They are a bit of pain to adjust, make sure you have some small screwdrivers that fit the small heads nicely to allow you to torque them down without damaging them!
 
Personaly I had a 2x fix mouted "scout" on a GBL Marlin and a few (very few) time this was lacking magnification, so I'd say 4 x is plenty! as mentioned above, you wont be sniping, but keep in mind that what you can hit at 100 yd with iron sight will be even easier at 400 with a 4x, since you get all the picture focus on one plane.... One down side is that since that I now have a 1-4x leupold Hog (not long relief) I realise that 4x might be too much for deep/overgrowth forest quick target acquisition.... I took the habit of walking in the bush set at 1x... knowing I can crank it a bit if needed... I do miss the scout setup a bit, but now having a true 1x is a good way to deal with it...
 
I got one of those aim sport 2-7 scout scope setups for an enfield project I've yet to finish, I really like the long eye relief and a fixed 4 power scope is too much for some thicker bush hunting. Anyways, the Aim sports scout scope is probably close to your budget, the Burris would be better, but I'm content with the aim sports.
