Scout Rifle

The Norinco M305 shorty fulfills many of Cooper's Scout Rifle criteria except the low weight and bolt action. Call it a "pseudo-Scout"
Also check out the American "Scout Rifle Forum". The guy who runs it (Andy) makes nice Ching Slings. Here is one:

I own a Gunsite Scout and an RFB an like them both for different reasons.

The Ruger is a great all around hunting / bush gun for what I do. I love the wide open field of view and the quick, yet deliberate target acquisition for precise round placement.

The RFB is a compact package that packs a punch. It's great for getting on target fast and delivering 5x .308 as fast as I can pull the trigger.
(why has no one made a .308 LAR that takes FN mags yet?? ;-) )

Tikka Battue Synthetic .308. Lighweight, compact, accurate. I set it up with a Masi QD 1 piece mount (which you can take off and put on in less than 10 seconds). And of course a Trijicon 1-4x accupoint. It has amazing open sights, and add a 5 or 10 round magazine (I have a couple 5s). Its the perfect do anything scout gun.

Checkout CZ's offering in the CZ 557 Range ("Ranger" in Canada). It's not 100% true scout rifle according to Jeff Cooper, but it fulfills most of the criteria. This was also CZ's submission for the Canadian Ranger rifles which is what originally caught my attention. I spent several months researching various Scout-type rifles and eventually landed on the CZ. It comes with a 10rnd mag. I bought a 4rnd mag from Wolverine recently for hunting as it sits more flush with the stock. They have stock on 557 mags. I flip-flopped between the Ruger and Tikka CTR. I must say the CZ just oozes quality so please at least review their website, which happens to have a nice write up on Jeff Cooper's "Scout Rifle".

Gorgeous rifle. If CZ would have brought this one to the table in stainless and synthetic and/or laminate - they would have been the real contender for the ranger rifle.

Are any of those rifle controlled round feed? I mean REAL CRF, not push feed with a mauser claw extractor.

New Rugers will be. None of the others to my knowledge. Most manufacturers see no advantage to it (I'm not arguing the point, simply stating a fact). If it's an important feature to you, buy a River or build on a Win 70 or Mauser with CRF.

+1. Love this rifle. It's not a true scout rifle, no, but it is like the dual sport motorcycle of the rifle world. Excellent iron sights. I will probably never sell this rifle. I'm pretty stoked they sell 4 round magazines, as thec10 digs into my back if using a sling.

Bolt action is not an absolute requirement even in Cooper's eyes. The weight however was/is.

How fast do the bolts cycle on the scout rifles is there a standard. I guess I am saying can
they cycle like an Enfield
The Enfield is one of the fastest cycling bolts around. If you're asking if the action needs to be smooth to qualify then answer is no.
We are not worthy....
Truly a master class in working a bolt action rifle on a course of fire where a bolt action has no right.
Well done.....

If you have ever handled or shot a Steyr you'd understand why this guy can work the action so fast. You get what you pay for.

I never held a steyr but I have a few enfield's, understood you get what you pay for but sometimes we can't pay for it LOL.
Since starting this thread I read up on everything that people suggest minus the the rifle study which I plan on. But I have watched a lot of you tube and Richard Man's channel. I have been looking at the mossberg scout, savage 11 scout and the ruger gun site. He talks a lot about the mossberg and ruger and promotes them both. But of course the steyr is at the topwhich he also promotes.

Mossberg scout? If you mean MVP patrol, I can tell you that you will never make it function like the Steyr, I had both, sold the patrol shortly after receiving it

Funny, in his book "The Art of the Rifle" Jeff Cooper doesn't sing the Enfield's praises...
for the fastest, smoothest bolt he recommends the Krag rifle. Check out videos of Norwegian "Stangskyting" if you want to see some fast bolt action shooting.
