In my limited experience with scout scopes and variable pistol scopes, the variable ones have a more limited use on semi auto rifles IMO. Once one cranks up the magnification scope power, it severly reduces your eye relief. With a scope scope on a Garand or M14 copy, this could put your sighting eye dangerously close to ejected casings. Best to stay with a fixed 2 or 4 power with these forward mounted optics I think.
