I got my first M-14 fiberglass stock a few weeks back. Being a total newbie to stockwork, I read Skullboy and some other posters tips. The first attempt wasn't to shabby. The selector hole had some shrink at the top as Skullboy showed in his pics. I tried using the glasing putty, and while it worked, I wasn't thrilled with the product.

On this second stock, I did a bit more trial and error to create better formed dams. Also, instead of using glasing putty to take care of shrink, I just whipped up a smaller batch of JB Weld and filled it in.

We'll see what it looks like in the morning.

I've always used fiberglass as a filler - degrease and rough up the area, dam it with masking tape and mix a bit of 'glass with fiberglass powder to thicken the mix. I've done 28 or so stocks this way - no cracking problems....

If I wasn't clear, the first stock was filled with JB Weld and then touched up with glasing putty.

I've never tried working with fiberglass and hardener. JB Weld is pretty simple. Squeeze equal amounts, stir white into black until it's an even grey, pour/push into cavity, smooth.

I'm currently working on my first USI synth stock right now too. I tried Permatex 5 min clod weld.....turned out horrible, picked off and used JB and it came out much better.

I also used a smaller amount of JB weld to make up for shrinkage, and areas that dipped in. I will just sand it level by hand in the morning. I'm only working on the selector hole right now.....After I "fill my hole in" Ill working on the front.

I got some shrinkage and a crack after shooting, in the area of my selector fill-in.

I sanded it down and filled the crack again. We'll see how it holds. I've heard that cracks in this area are pretty common and if it reoccurs I think I'll just leave it. It doesn’t really bother me because I know why it's there.

Also, when I repainted it, after the fill in work, I went over te Krylon with some of the recommended matt clear coat - the difference is amazing.

Has anyone used automotive body filler? How are the results?

What I did on my second was to tape up a piece of cardboard into a roll to fill in the bottom recess under the area needing to be filled, then coated it in waxed paper and stuffed it in place. The backside of the recess is hard to tape a dam in place, so I rolled up more cardboard and wedged it in behind for support.
