See through scope mounts

Now the purists among us will tell you that these high mounts are generally less accurate than their lower cousins. So who would want 'em? Or worse, those evil tip off, or removable mounts!

Truth is, that for typical bush ranges any loss in accuracy, if it does exist, is inconsequential.
Western shooters may have an argument, but at ranges under 200 yards, maybe even 300, bambi is in real trouble.

So, what's your favourite see through/tip off/take off rig?

And before anyone says it... take off eh! :)

Me I don't like using scopes, and generally avoid it, but the time is rapidly coming when I'll have no choice.
To fill that void, I've mounted a Lyman tip off rig on my 98 Winchester.
Real nice to be able to swing that scope aside when it's covered with rain drops, or filled with snow.
So far, scope accuracy has been not stellar, but acceptable, out to 200 yards.
2.5 to 3".
I've not tried to iron sight that distance with this rifle.

The main advantage of the tip off, is the lower scope mounting. Not much higher than a traditional fixed mount. It's flaw, is that is has to have some play in the mounts in order to move, resulting in poorer accuracy.

Hate 'em too. I actually started threads on a couple of boards some time ago to ask how many of the people who had see-through mounts had ever actually shot game with the iron sights. Virtually no-one, as I recall. Scopes are very good now, and have a wide field of view. I have used a scope at 4X on a running deer at 15 feet and had lots of the animal in my scope, not the legendary "all you'll see is a brown blob!"
You do make a good case with the snow, though. Been there....deer got to walk. Sheesh.

Not an option I'd take. They generally are too high. Leupold QRW rings are nice, and you could take them off w/o tools should you decide you want to ditch the scope.

I too hate them. A scope of the proper power, mounted as low as possible, is a very fast and accurate sight system. Don't try to find some sort of middle ground. If you are going to go with a scope (and we all have to eventually) commit to the change. Mount it properly and you will quickly find it is a great way to shoot well. Maybe better than you ever have before.

I have a set of see through mounts on a Savage 24F. The fixed 4x scope is zeroed to the rifle barrel. Yes, it sits higher than is ideal, but I think that's a compromise worth living with in this case.

I use Cad-Technik mounts on a couple of my Enfields. So far, there hasn't been occasion to use its facility of removing the scope to allow use of the iron sights, but that was one reason I bought them. I have taken them off often enough for cleaning or to remove the bolts that I know they return to zero.

Supercub, if you'd grace us with the Franken-Jerk-o-Matic with the 50mm objective please. I know you saved that poor sap's pic. :D
This thing's is a classic! cou:

What about flip-up scope caps or similar on a low mounted scope?

.

I have to admit I've not tried the newer flip up covers in bad weather.
They sure look good.
20 years ago, I hunted a long swamp north of Sudbury, you could easy see a thousand yards. I had a 338WM Browning Stainless Stalker with a low mounted Leupold scope, no iron sights, and Uncle Mike's see through scope covers.

One morning I went out moose hunting as I always did back then, in the canoe. There was heavy ice fog. It was beautiful, spider webs hanging with frosty fog, hoar frost on everything, gorgeous.
Took my camera out of it's case for some pics to find that the lenses were fogged inside the case! The mirror was fogged inside the camera!
Tried to look through my see through scope covers. No go, fogged. Flipped them up, same deal, fogged.
Took them off, and never put them on again. Carry kleenex in pocket, and check scope frequently. Carry scope under armpit in rain or snow.
I hate that ####.
Not that irons are perfect, they suffer from snow globs too, but less of an issue to clear.

Yes, I've taken running deer, at 100 yards with the scoped rifle, also close up deer. Anyone who says you can't, is either using too big a scope for his type of hunting, or in the case of a variable, setting the power too high.

As most of my hunting calls for very close shooting, I set the variable at 1X. On the Leupold, I'm told this is actually 1.5, but it works great.
I figure If I get a longer shot, I'll probably have the time to turn up the power. Close encounters require a shot within ten seconds usually less.

I hate the see-thru mounts for all the reasons above. On the other hand, for hunting in the thick bush where I do, the old Weaver Pivot Mounts (sadly no longer available) are a real advantage. Being able to quickly swing the scope to the side and use the irons gives a lot of flexibility. No comment on their accuracy beyond about 100 yards as I've never had a shot that far.

I have a couple of the old one piece Tip-offs that came on a couple M-100 Wins I bought. I thought they'd be inaccurate but they quickly proved me wrong! Even thou they are just held down with a couple spring clips I found they shot as well as any hunting scope would allow.
I also ran a set of See-Threws on a Win for a time.
I found the gun fit me very much like a 94 carbine does...terrible, I have a hard time getting my neck crooked over to see thru the sites on 94s & Win line of 88s & 100s. A see thru mount put the scope high enough for me to acquire game quickly.

I tried those flip up covers on my last hunt.
I fought the front one terribly on my 3x9x50.
Dang thing wouldn't stay down.
And I pretty much gave up on the rear with the fast focus occular.
Piece of kleenex in the objective if it's not pretty out.
Big fist of arse wipe in my pocket.
Gadgets..........uuhmmph.
I had the tip offs on the old Schultz with a nice set of barrel sights dad put on.
I got convinced to take the whole shinnanigans off. :HR:d:h::bangHead::slap::onCrack:f:P:2:f:P:2::rey2:angf:P::pirate:

The only reason to use irons would be for very close in shooting or for very bad weather.

The modern zoom option of 1.5-5 or 2-7 negates the need for irons for close in shooting.

For real bad weather use the back up rifle with irons.

See through rings are very dangerous. The only saving grace is that they are almost never used to shoot with the irons. The danger is that with irons you don't know where the scope is. It might be 1/4" from your head.

I realize that some of you ancient guys still think in prehistoric terms, and still believe that using contraptions such as see through scope mounts or flip over mounts are actually a viable solution, but I'm sorry- You are wrong!Laugh2

Long before I considered one of these contraptions, I'd install a low power scope, a red dot scope, or something totally tacticool. The military had this very problem- close and long shots and they didn't solve it with see through, they made a more versatile optical scope. FWIW, I've shot the last handful off deer at 10, 20, 30, 50 and 400 yards, all with a 2.5-8 or 3-10 scope.

It's almost 2012, gentlemen. There are better ways to get from A to B:p

I have no use for see-thru rings.....they're ugly and they suck for the reasons
given above. Some of my hunting rifles have scopes, but they also have backup
irons in case the scope gets buggered.
My main hunting rifle needs no scope.
