Semi Auto Rifle for predator control

A Benelli MR1 would fit the bill. They are a little on the heavier side, but mags are cheap and everywhere (stanag/AR mags). They're more than accurate enough at 200m with decent ammo.

Talk about first post thread derail?!! What are you? The law? He asked for rifle advice pertaining to species, not when and if he had your permission to shoot them. You need to get over yourself!! f:P:

BTW OP I run a newer mini-14. Works great out to 200 yards with 55 gr jhp on yotes. Recoil is almost non-existent. I can’t see why with a little heavier bullet like a 62 - 70 gr it wouldn’t flatten a wolf at those ranges?

Didn't you just derail the derailment

Are you the internet police?

Whoa, easy there fellas it’s all good.LOL. So here’s the latest update. Pop’s came over today and we went over all your guys suggestions. From NR black style rifles, pumps, autos, calibers etc. So by showing him all the different pictures explaining the differences I let him choose what he liked the best. It was enjoyable actually. The winner of this debate is the Browning BAR MK3 243. It was really between the Ruger mini 14 and the BAR in the auto department and he considered a pump, but really wanted an autoloader. (He had a Belgium BAR 3006) He also thought it would be better to have a 243 in case he wanted to deer hunt with it. So there you have it, I’ll post a range report when it comes in. Thanks to all your suggestions, it gave us options to consider in my gift purchase. Thanks again gang. Cheers

He is not really talking about coyote hunting here. More coyote control. I would suggest a 22 magnum in semi-auto or pump. Has many advantages when shooting around buildings and livestock

Finally made it out for a quick range session. Zeroed in the Nikon monarch 3 2.5-10. Had a selection of 243 ammo to try and found the factory Winchester 100gr ammo shot best. I’ll maybe try some others later, but for it’s application it will be fine. Trigger is definitely not the best, but again for what it is, it’ll work.

I think you done good! I was going to suggest the Mini14, but when the idea of deer was introduced that swung my thinking in the same direction as yours. Good choice!

Really, those two guns were about the only ones mentioned here which seemed to fully match the criteria you laid out. Most of the other suggestions sounded like one gun nut making a suggestion to another gun nut; nothing wrong with that, but it didn't sound like your dad was a gun nut, just a guy who wants to shoot some yotes (and maybe deer).

Yes my father is far from being a gun nut. I always like hearing input from other members as it sometimes gives you an idea that you may not of thought of. He will be getting the new gun tomorrow when I and the family are heading to camp for family day weekend. Hope he likes it.

Browning bar in .243,great rifle. Enjoy.

Seems to be a smooth functioning rifle so far. Very little recoil as well. The trigger is something to be desired, but I’m use to Sako crisp rifle triggers. Thanks for the compliment!

Great choice, your dad should be happy; if he is not, send me the rifle! LOL
