Semi-Sten: CFC AND RCMP approved and Home at Last

The 3008 doesn't use a mag. catch retainer like a Sten, so the housing itself would be made slightly longer, front to back. Can't alter the front, because that is the limiting position for the front of the magazine. The rear of the housing would have to be shifted to the rear. This would be do-able, but the thought of cutting into a $2500 gun to permanently alter it to use $10 magazines instead of $85 ones leaves me a bit uneasy. Or, the welds could be cut, and a new magazine housing assembly fabricated and installed. Either way, I think it would be easier and more cost effective to just buy the 38u40 magazines.
Alternatively, measure a Sten mag, front to rear and compare it to the size a 38u40. Perhaps the rear of the Sten mag. could be thinned enough that the mag. could fit the 3008.

I am referring to changing an existing Marstar 3008 to Sten mags.

To early in the morning...I didn't catch that.

If you are talking about installing a mk2 type magwell with the feed on the left side, you would have to replace the bolt, and likely the main tube. For the real mk2 look, you would also want to install the sten trunnion, barrel and nut, along with the front site. In the end all you would still have from the BD3008 would be a very expensive trigger mechanism and buttstock, along with a serial number that would be out of sequence for any sten. Seems like a high price to pay for the open bolt feature. But don't think I didn't consider it if my SAS3 didn't work out.

I know it was discussed way back when, but it's kind of a shame Marstar couldn't talk the same company into making the BD-sten. Mind you, at $2400, it's hard to say if it would sell many more copies than the 3008. I know the one BD3008 that was in the local dealers showcase finally went back to Marstar as there was no interest in it. I fondled it, but the price tag and the lack of history to the gun weighed too heavily against it.

FWIW, Prexis in the USA now offers a MP3008 kit. Al told me about it yesterday - it's that new. Uses the SAS firing system though.

I remember having downloaded from the web, how to "convert" a vertical mag Sten into a MP40 look-a-like. So, using the SAS3 firing system OR a MP3008 parts kit, one with a good background in sheet metal fabrication could get a "10 footer" not too bad. A leather circular bag filled with sand and some plastic, wooden or leather mallets and maybe lots of practice and you're in business.

That's in occasions like this that I'm glad I went into body repair and painting. :D

(10 footer: from ten feet it doesn't look that bad)

J. Savoie - Do you know the history of the Sten with the housing adapted for PPSh magazines?

As far as odd Stens go, I did see an Indonesian one In Edmonton quite a few years back. It was Mk. 5-ish.

I was thinking about a Marstar 3008 with a Sten magazine coming from the bottom.

That top photo sows a pretty neat way of attaching the rear sling to the extra material under the butt hook. I would imagine that Thompson-like forward grip would be irritating with the rifle slung on a long march.

So many variations...so little time. I'm off for a weeks trip, but hopefuly I'll have a bit of quality shop time in Feb.

Sorry I don't remember much on this one but I kept an e-mail from a source where to get conversions to 7,62TT. THEY must know about this variant.

FWIW, I'm working on a design to convert ANY sten into tokarev mag feed using an insert. Sadly, I'm waiting on some bits and pieces before I build a prototype. More on that to follow in the MSC thread.

Also of note, the thread is updated with tips on building your own SAS3 bolts, cutting out the mag well collars, etc.

Cheers!

For the first 5 rounds, it should feed fine from regular Sten mags. the curved mags only matter if you need 10 or more rounds, I suspect.

About that Tokarev-Sten conversion I've read on the Stens forum and I quote

The overall length of the 7.62 Tokarev round is longer (1.35") than
the 9x19mm (1.16").

The 7.62 will not fit into a 9mm magazine -- although a 9mm WILL fit
into a 7.62mm mag, and is close enough that the extra space doesn't
usually give reliability problems.

Likewise, the 7.62mm magazine will not fit into the standard 9mm mag
well.

And ...

No, the receiver does not have to change at all. A different mag well
is used with a 7.62 X 25 barrel. It all just swaps out.

The setup works. My MKII set off some kind of alarm at the gun range
when Using Tokarev rounds. Something about too fast a velocity for an
indoor range.

The Sten mag. catch retainer is almost 1/8" of an inch thick. If the adapter were incorporated with the mag. catch retainer, would there be enough space fore and aft for a Tokarev magazine? The magazine catch retainer screw could secure the adapter into the housing.

Didn't find the stock using the search function, but I wold not put a folder on a Sten anyhow. I think it wold look like crap, but that's just me.

And you just know that one is going to appear with an M4 pattern buttstock.....
And some rails.....
