Service Rifle Calgary

Like tree mugger said, the Edson range is a joke. I was the first one to shoot there after they installed the ground baffles. It was impossible to shoot your target without tagging the top of the wooden wall of the baffle, even with the target as high up on the board as possible. They also put in pistol bays like in an indoor range that you have to stay inside while shooting. Also, it's only 300m with one spot for prone, which they don't want you to do because you're not on a bench shooting over the stupid ground baffles. Hinton goes out to 500m but probably only wide enough for 5 shooters.

Off topic comment alert:
I don't know what it is about the current cfo, but he's obsessed with making people install ground baffles. Anyway, I guess I won't be renewing my Edson membership unless I can get some prone time in....

Looking forward to Wainwright!

I haven't been there for a few years, so the ground baffle thing is new. I agree, it screws up a range for sure. I figured the template was considerable - I guess not.

Check out the Edmonton/Spruce Grove / CHAS thread - sticky. So far we are only out to 300 but shoot all positions, snap and rapid. Run downs are for the old guys and only for the P-Cans! I haven't seen anything from Rick Kurina in Lethbridge yet but know he is up to something.

run what ya brung. Optics, no optics, don't matter. We are not going to discriminate against anyone who wants to shoot and can be safe on the range. Once we get all the bugs worked out and start running these more often, also numbers permitting we can look at different classes, till then........ I was gonna say sky is the limit but we have to stay within the range templates so no .50's or .338's for now.

This is also subject to range availablity. Training on an active base takes priority over gun club.

Any update Jay?

Let me guess - the APRA Fudds decided that if you don't do what we tell you than you can't exist as a club. We want you to do all the physical work to maintain the range but we have the right to veto and shut down any initiatives you might come up with.

You want to play on OUR range than you have to do what we tell you. Someone should ask if they hold the land title to the property.

Yes little things like forwarding the dues collected.

This has been beaten to death.
We know members of the CSRA made mistakes years ago, we also know the APRA continues to screw up year after year by alienating the fastest growing segment of Canadian firearms owners out of petty spite.
Everyone gets it.

Hell, I remember summer 2011.
I loooove range control.

I remember summer 2011. First year I tried service rifle. Joined the CSRA and went to almost every match. Had a pile of fun, shot a lot of rounds. Then the APRA decided petty politics trumps people like me getting into a sport they fall in love with.

Everyone there is a fiefdom to be had, an egomaniac will come and destroy it

How is it that there are so few ranges in Alberta? Isn't it supposed to be the most gun friendly province in the country?

^^Maybe the powers that be are using us as a test case. If they can do/close stuff down in a "Gun Friendly" province, then they can do such stuff elsewhere easier.
In other provinces, there apparently are provincially funded ranges. I've never heard of such a thing here (in Alberta). Maybe we aren't so gun friendly after all. :(

While there can always be more ranges, the real issue is a lack of comradere amongst shooters and competitors of differing disciplines. 'Lack of Comradere' - hell, it is well worse than that - it is a complete lack of respect....

What Beltfed says.....

Many matches are really no more than booking ranges so that groups of buddies can shoot.

There seems to be little attempt to set things up to teach new shooters in various disciplines.

Cost of land and people "too busy" to recreate possibly?
My Homestead Range/APRA experience soured me on organized rifle shooting and the orgs involved (not service rifle) and I'm lucky enough to have access to private long range facilities thankfully.
