Service Rifle Review of Falcon Menace 1.5 x 5 x 30 Matches 1-12

So, I finally got out and box tested this scope in preparation for the SR match this coming weekend and I'm glad that I did. It did not track accurately or return to zero. The mil subtensions matched the turrets at 4x, and not at 5x as they are supposed to. I only rant it 4 mils square, which shouldn't even be close to the limits.

dam....that sucks

Its an annoyance, but not a show-stopper. Because I know what the click values actually are, I can create my dope cards accordingly. And because I know what magnification makes the reticle match the turrets, I can set it to that when I need to correct for misses on the deliberates. That doesn't get rid of the issue of it not returning to previous settings though. I'll have to deal with that and be selective of when I make turret adjustments and when I just use hold-offs.

This is why you should always verify your scopes...

Before mine gave up the ghost during the walk back zeroing at last year's NSCC, it had been a reliable sight, as far as repeatability goes. Never used the mildots. Perhaps there can be variation scope to scope. Always worth testing, rather than just assuming.

Did you send it in to get fixed? They have a limited lifetime warranty...

I'm going to send mine in next week (hopefully). It's disappointing... I needed this thing to work until a permanent solution became available, then I was going to put in on my .22LR upper. I guess now I either have to put my 4-14FFP on the rifle or get another temporary solution while it's getting fixed. The 4-14 really isn't ideal from the weight point of view, or that it needs to be focused for each distance...

Nothing to mount a front sight on...

I'm tempted to swap out the 1.5-5x for the 4-14x for this match, just to try it.

Sounds like a decent option given the timing to the match. Of course I don't know what other optics you have squirrled away in the sofa cushions and what not :)

It should work fine for matches 1, 3 and 4. Match 2 is doable on 4x but you will be a bit slow due to narrowed field of view. That is what I would guess anyway.

With turrets... just my Premier Heritage scopes and even the 3-15x is considerably heavier than the 4-14. Plus, to get the proper eye relief, I would need to mount it in a cantilever mount, and I don't have a 34mm one.

Sent it away in September. A replacement warranty policy isn't worth much when there is no inventory from which to replace it.

I have a Leupold 1 1/2 - 5 with target knobs, as well as the Bushnell 6500 1 1/4 - 8 to use. I would like to receive a replacement for the FM, I liked it, but have given up holding my breath.

I've seen a FM 4-14 used for Matches 1-16. It is a bit on the heavy/bulky side, but it certainly worked for the shooter.

tiriaq,

Did you ever figure out a solution to keep that quick zero turret on the Bushnell in place? Those new 1-6.5x 6500 are pretty tempting at this point...

I've not had a chance. I did use it during the OSA guest instructor's weekend for CQB type drills, and it worked very well. Long eye relief, used a Burris PEPR mount to get it set foreward. Have yet to do a walkback to 500m with it. Hope to do that next week.
I'm thinking just a clamping band or ring with a small screw through lugs. Pop it around, then tighten it, just the way a lens is held in an eyeglass frame.

I went and looked at at 6500 with those turrets just now and I don't see how that would work. I don't see any way of preventing it from popping up without also preventing it from turning or at the least limiting its travel.

I was referring to a zero stop. Haven't tried to figure out how the lift and turn could be made more positive.

I would think that any form of zero stop like that would pop it up and cause you to lose your zero.

That could be a real possibility unless the cap can be locked down.
If I had a hand in the design of this sight, I'd add setscrews to the cap.

I would have put exposed turrets that have a zero lock like the ones on the Leupold Mark 6. The problem is that most of these companies are designing these low power optics with 3-gun in mind. Those guys are only shooting 200 or 300 yards at most and want capped turrets because they toss their rifles into a barrel at the end of the stage.

Well, the FM 4-14FFP kinda sucked for M2.1, but it wasn't too bad for the other parts of M2 and was fine in the other matches. A light 2.5-10x scope seems ideal for this...

We know an outstanding competitor who uses a Nightforce 2 1/2-10.....
