Service Rifle Review of Falcon Menace 1.5 x 5 x 30 Matches 1-12

Shot the 1.5-5 in the NSCC service rifle matches, with a 1-12 agg. of 537, and the 4-14 FFP Metric in the sniper. Third place in pistol/sniper/service rifle 3 gun.
These scopes are in the "best buy" category, and will do the job.

Great News
I'm really looking forward to mounting it.
Although this sounds demented I mean it in the gentlest way possible.

These are on the way from the UK now. 35 sold so far. We have 25 pieces left for sale. Get them before they are gone!!! Price is $324.49. Please email mike@allengunworks.com to order.

Buy 2 - they're cheaper that way and you always need a backup. Having a backup pretty much guarantees that your primary won't go tango uniform - kinda like taking your rain jacket to the field to ensure that it won't rain. Leave it behind just one time and what happens?? Downpour...

See where I'm coming from???

just got this scope from UK, they're $230.00 CAD shipped to my door brand new. had to wait about a week for EUU documents to go through, but i got the scope :) not sure why they're 325+ tax +shipping here in Canada, sounds like a rip off to me? same scope, convenience charge of 150 bucks maybe ...

now need to decide how to mount this thing, then practice a bit, and i will attempt a service rifle match !

cheers,

Okay Service Conditions shooters on a budget:

I'm shooting a Hornady 68 gr HPBT exiting at 3000 fps using WC735 surplus powder from Higginson's shop. About 25.0 gr will get this velocity. This is a warmish to hot load!

What barrel length and twist rate are you using?

I just got back from a range test of the:
Hornady 68 gr FMJ HP BT
using 24.0 gr of H335
and found it to have a 2823 ft/s muzzle velocity (+/- 43 ft/s)

through a 16" barrel with a 1:9 twist.

It would appear 6 out of 10 shots would be within a MOA, 2 out of 10 shots would be within two MOA, and 2 out of 10 shots would be within 4 MOA

In other words, I had about one "flyer" for every 5 shots taken -- the sample size being 49 rounds.

I do not remember having such an issue with:
Hornady 2267B 55 gr FMJBT
using 23.8 gr of WC735
and found to have an average muzzle velocity of 2876 ft/s

Currently, it looks like I am better off using the 55 gr FMJBT for the upcoming Service Rifle match...

Or do I need to push the bullet faster?

I've never had great success with the Hornady 68's,, or their 75's. I've had similar results as yours, with a group within a group kind of thing. I stick with Sierra Matchkings, much more consistent in my opinion.

:) Using Falcone Menace in American Defense AD-Scout mount ;-)

Above is test group of Hornady 68 gr FMJ HP BT with 24.0 gr H335

Impact is at 50 yards, so "flyer" is 4 MOA off centre... at 400 yards, that would be 4 x 4 = 16 inches too high :(

Thank you for the information. I will try to get some Sierra Matchkings ASAP (order already placed) :)

For a 16" barrel with a 1:9 twist, should it be the

65 grain SBT

or the

69 grain HPBT

Oh... must be the 69 grain, because the 65 is a hunting round. Oddily, the 69 gr is stating a better BC at slower velocities:

Thank you :)

Yep, the 69gr Sierra Match Kings worked for me.

I was lazy -- should have adjusted the scope magnification so the reticle dot was equal to the target size. It was evening, but not dark enough to see the Falcon Menace 1.5 x 5 x 30 illuminations (green or red). Well, at least I got two shots touching each other and all five shots were reasonable grouped (no flyers) and/or chrono errors.

Actually, I got a far more consistent grouping with the Sierra 69 grain than with the Hornady 55 grain. That said, I did not take the additional time to see what H335 load resonated best with my rifle barrel... just went with 24 grains of H335 ;-)

Now need to clean the rifles and produce the elevation charts for this upcoming match...

Thank you for your kind help!
