Settle a bet for me. Can we hunt with our antiques?

Another question you should ask is, is it wise to do so? Will a CO or OPP officer look kindly at you tagging game with your antique pistol?

Not recommended for deer with your .38spl SAA.

I don't recall ever seeing anything on the MNR site or books saying that any handgun is allowed in Ontario currently. As for muzzleloaders and shotgun antiques are fine as there is really no difference from a modern ML in the CO's minds. BP rifles have to abide by the WMU's limits for rifle hunts.

That is my take on the regs from what I have been able to find. If anyone can find the regs allowing antique handgun hunting on the MNR site please link it. It would be good to have it printed out and with oneself whilst hunting if it is allowed. We all know the 5-0 will have no clue and it is doubtful the Co's will know either.

The original question has so many problems as to be unanswerable.

Gotta decide which antiques you are going to try to hunt with first, as there are single shot cartridge rifles, shotguns, muzzle loaders, flintlock long arms, and various handguns and rimfire rifles other than the .22 cal's spec'd in the laws.

As far as the regs, go, mostly they detail the things you cannot do.If it does not say specifically that you can, but does not say you cannot, you are then treading on pretty thin ice, I think.

BC Regs actually outright prohibit taking game with a handgun. As far as I am aware they count a pellet pistol in the definition.

YMMV

.....Provincial hunting tools regulations; I believe Ontario allows for hunting with antique handguns, we've been through this before and I think it was Tactical870 that posted a reply he got from the Ontario MNR or some similar governing body. The thread exists in the antiques forum here, you'll have to search it out.....

ON regulations prohibit hunting with restricted firearms; antique handguns are not restricted, so by default hunting with them is not prohibited. Not quite the same thing as specifically permitting them to be used. This situation will likely last until the vigorously anti-gun ON Gov't gets wind of this "loophole", and that will be the end of it.

Check again and look for air pistols. Handgun hunting has been much talked about here try a search and read some of the threads. I would hope that Dalton would have heard from a bunch of us when he stated" we all know nobody hunts with handguns" What a twerp!

The Ontario muzzleloader season starts Oct. 16, a full two weeks ahead of the regular season, so it is actually being encouraged. The question did not specifically ask about handguns.

It is not necessarily treading on thin ice. That is just the way the law usually works ..... it tells you stuff you cannot do. If what you want to do is not on the list of what you cannot do, then it is alright to do it (within the bounds of common sense and responsibility, of course). For example, the ON hunting regs do not specifically say that it is fine to chew gum while hunting, or to hunt with your socks on the wrong feet. The ON hunting regs do not specifically say it is alright for people with bald heads to hunt. If the law says you cannot hunt with restricted hand guns, then what it means is if you are hunting with a hand gun, make sure it is not restricted ..... nothing more. I do not need the law to give me a list of all the other things I can do provided I am not hunting with a restricted hand gun. Is it alright, while NOT hunting with a restricted hand gun, to take a Louis L'Amour novel along to read up in the tree stand? The law does not give me specific permission to do this but it doesn't outlaw reading Louis L'Amour novels in the bush, so I feel free to do this and don't consider myself as skating on thin ice if caught with a Louis L'Amour novel out in the bush.

Having said all this .... the more important question is how far you want to push the limits of discretion. It is usually advisable to enjoy your antiques in a non-high-profile way that avoids starting a media panic.

It's not an antique, but I've taken my reproduction blunderbuss to the field for snowshoehares.
I get the feeling the OP is directly refering to antique handguns though.......

if its flintlock legaly its antique :p

antique handgun hunting is something id like to know about id most likely not carry it for hunting but as back up a snigle shot muzzleloading pistol(antique of corse) along with a muzzleloading rifle would be cool

My point of view it might be legal but I wouldn t want to explain this to a cop or gamewarden especially a rookie in the woods and go through the hassle that you would probably get.Their way of thinking is if they don t know their answer is no.

I think you are going to most likely be disappointed in this endevour. I myself discern from our gun laws that antique handguns cannot share the same trip for hunting edible game species of any sort. My own opinion only.

OP YES, as i take it you can use your ANTIQUE HG in Ont to hunt. Page 21 first paragraph of ONT REGS. YOU MAY NOT USE a REST or PHROHIB firearm or FULLY-AUTO FIREARMS to hunt! Air pellets and pistols up to 500fps no more are fine. Non Rest (FIREARMS) are fine. SEMI and or REPEATERS fine so on. Technically you have DE-stricted Antique you can use where discharging legal and safe. AS Long as said arm IS NOT REST/PHROH its says your fine. But read for yourself to see how you take..

Handgun hunting would be great! We do have it that a REST can be used in the woods IE defense, back-up, so on provided you have trapping or prospecting lic or OPP or your local police approve said use of said RESTICT ARM

Over here in his duplicate thread he's clearly looking for the go ahead to hunt deer with his .38spl antique SAA.

I'll say it here as well .38spl is underpowered from a SAA in order to deliver an ethical shot to cleanly kill deer at range. It would require you to load into hot loads of +P ammo or into the realm of .357 which the antique SAA frame is not built to take the pressure of, ethical harvest aside this is unsafe and could very well turn your gun into a grenade.

Not recommended.

Thanks guys. Thank you hillbilly and corral. I know I wasnt as clear as I could have been, I was posting quickly at work. My father in law likes to think be knows more about his tuff than I do. It's all in good fun though. Renovating bathrooms with a partner is like living in a submarine. Very very close quarters all day long so you need to have some fun
