I would suggest you get out and handle some of your choices. Once you can eliminate what doesn't fit you, choosing your first shotgun will much easier.

You should add Mossberg to your choices as well.

get a used wingmaster. best money you will spend.
expresses arnt very nice, and you can ususaly find a use wingmaster for about as much.
buy wrong_way's gun, i have been eyeing it up for a while, but cant justify another 870 at this time.

Sorry for not replying earlier - I had a lot of homework to do.

Well, I thought Maverick covered Mossberg!

10ga is a specialist gun? Oooh... tell me more!

Looks like the 870's winning out. Now I suppose it's going to be a battle between that and the M4... 'coz I kinda *do* like the concept of an autoloader, admittedly... I'll have to talk to Wrong Way about this.

Thanks!

- Dave.

I am a Ithaca M37 fan, however they can be too light for all day at the trap range.
And due to availability of new parts and warranty service, and the ability to more easily view the chamber, my vote goes to an 870 Express with a 20 inch slug barrel and a longer barrel with interchangeable chokes for everything else.

Mossberg 590. Maverick is a cheaper Mossberg 500 (even cheaper than a 500? Inconceivable).

Ive shot ducks, rabbits, grouse, and trap all with my 870 quite successfully for years. Sold it some years back and regret it. Bought a new 870 Express 3in last fall and will continue happily with this one where I left off. Love the doubles-especially the O/U but find them heavy. The pump is quite nimble and I can carry it a long way. Damn near a bulletproof gun. I own a bunch of guns but the 870 is one of my favorite toys. And I love the sound of the action cycling. Soooo Macho. Also I am told that the new steel shot has bismuth or something in them that makes them shoot like lead or better. Check it out

Yeah, it's currently a battle between the M4 Super 90, Remington 870, Mossberg 590, and Benelli Nova.

They all have their selling points. I'm looking for some more 'in-depth' information on the Super 90, though, especially about it being able to cycle very light trap loads reliably and if the stock mount can be removed to leave just a pistol grip all on its own, without the stock. Of course, I don't want to have to cut, saw, bend, or file anything.

Your location looks like Toronto......If you feel like a drive up to Barrie.....You could always try my M4......If you like?:)

Actually, thats a good idea! We could all go to OGC and you can shoot Bramels, and I'll bring out a couple 870's and a Norinco.

:D :D Oh! heck, let's make it a party.:) Should I bring my Fabarm shorty as well?? Maybe I'll just bring all 10 of my shotguns. Anyone got an requests?;)

IMHO, you can discount the 10ga straightway from your list......a field howitzer is not a actually a true requirement :)

And some trap/ skeet club will only let you shoot 12 ga. and 2 3/4 at that.
