Well I fell in to some $ and I'm thinking about a new gun. I want to get back into metal frame guns (I have had enough glocks).

So I've been doing a lot of research into 1911's which I have had before. I was thinking of going with a dlask in 9mm.

But now there is a new player on the block the CZ shadow...I have noticed a lot of ipda shooters are using them, lots of good reviews and the price tag compared to a nice 1911 is attractive.

I am just curious to my fellow cgners opinions on which they would prefer? I would put a poll up but I'm writing this post from the blackberry @ work.

Cheers!

Well the shadow is really a ipsc pistol and needs some minor mods to qualify for idpa. Just for plinking and future idpa use you can look into the cz85 combat. I'm not sure about a 1911 for idpa but the sti spartan in 9mm would be a great pistol and in the same price range.

I have dreams of ipda, but the reality probably plinking.

The Shadow is too heavy for IDPA BNIB. Requires mods as described in several threads. Some make weight easily but others require a lot of work.

That being said they are great guns. I have had 3 of them and I own 2 right now.

Of the 2 choices I would buy the 1911 in 9mm and shoot ESP with it.

Cheers,
John

If you want to get into IDPA then I would suggest the CZ85 Combat over the Shadow. The Shadow weighs to much in stock form and requires Dennis Marschall thin grips and a different mag brake to get the weight down to 39oz to be legal. The CZ85 Combat is lighter and can be used stock in SSP or ESP Divisions.

Unless you want to make the modifications to the Shadow, the Combat is a better choice for playing IDPA over the Shadow. The Combat has the identical trigger group so it can enjoy the same crisp trigger pull thta you find in the Shadow with a trigger job. This really isn't all that necessary given the Combat does come with a pretty good trigger stock that gets better over time. I have both and prefer the Combat for IDPA others do the mods and prefer the Shadow. Go with either gun. Both are rock solid and will last you a life time.

Take Care

Nah 9 mm is a great caliber for 1911 - which I recommend.

Mags are ten - reliable if set up correctly.

The same can be said for the CZ - needs to be set up correctly. The difference is the 1911 will be rock solid for near forever - can't say the same for the maintenance queen CZ's.

Recommend STI single stack of your choice. Order with magwell and ambi safeties - pin the grip - drop in C&S trigger. Purchase Wilson mags. Take BB - shoot as much as possible son.

While back I will say Shadow as well because it is a outstanding firearm that you can buy for the money, but still I like the traditional look and feel of the 75/85.

I've got a Shadow, and I've been considering IDPA sometime soon, but IPSC first. Right now, for IDPA, I've been looking at pistols other than a Shadow. As has been pointed out, the Shadow requires various mods to be allowed in IDPA, and honestly I don't feel like swapping parts between my pistol everytime I change from IPSC to IDPA (or the reverse). So I'm currently considering an M&P9 (since its plastic, you're not into that), a CZ85 Combat, or a 1911 in 9mm. WTR the 1911, I'm leaning toward an STI, but the model hasn't been decided yet. Spartan, Ranger or Trojan. I can't say, because of all 3 pistol types, the CZ85 is currently at the top of the list.

D_ i have no idea how you can call a CZ a maintenance queen. In fact the only complaints i've heard with cz's were overly tight chambers in Shadows causing issues with some ammo (mostly poor quality reloads but some factory as well) and the occasional broken slide stop. My first 9mm pistol gets cleaned every 3000 rounds whether she needs it or not and rarely anymore. The only maintenance i have had was replacing an extractor somewhere between 25000 and 30000 rounds. I'm somewhere around 40000 now. Not bad for a comparatively cheap race gun.

If just plinking then look at the cz 75, they are they same gun without the full length frame and minor difference, sights but if for plinking I would be all over the 75 and they can be had for reasonable money on the EE. I love my shadow but I wish it was silver or chrome.....the plated 75 is sweet!

It's a good gun no question but I broke a slide stop and trigger return spring at least once a month when I used to run it in IPSC.

Nothings as reliable/fun/rewarding to shoot as a nice 1911. My opinion.
