Noob question incoming - Is it important to use the same brand shellholder as your dies, ie can you use a Lee shell holder with RCBS dies or should you use matching shell holder and dies?

You can use mismatched brands
I use RCBS / Forster dies and equipment, but use Lee shellholders as they are cheap (bought a pack of 10 for 20 bucks, instead of paying 7 bucks a piece)

But not every brand follows the same number chart. see the conversion listing below:

The only issue you may run into, is with accessories such as trimmers or handheld primer tools. Hornady has a larger hole than RCBS, thus the RCBS have to be drilled out for a Hornady trimmer.

The only stupid question is the one not asked. You can generally tell who that was by the explosion on the firing line.

As noted, the major makers have settled on uniform dimensions for key things like die thread size and shell holder 'groove'. Have at 'er.

When I first got into reloading I bought both set's of shell holder's from LEE.
I've never had to look far to find the right one,and I've helped out a couple guy's that were in a bind.

I just make sure to keep using the same shellholder with the same dies once the dies are set up and collars locked.
