Can't find a law referencing this but CFC tells me that you cannot send a Restricted to a P.O. Box (Must be a physical address)

Are they making this up ?

The CFC requires the legal land address where the gun(s) will be stored. Therefore they require your legal land address, plus the PO Box. However, the gun can be shipped to your PO.

The issue is with transport. If it doesn't go to your physical address then it goes to a PO Box. Now legally to transport a new to you firearm from the PO Box to your home, you require a Temp ATT. Now when you go to the PO Box you might not know what it is you're picking up, therefore they don't like to ship to PO Boxes.

On the flip side, if they ship to your house, you're not there, post office leaves a pick up slip and the gun goes to the post office. Now legally you're supposed to get a Temp ATT to get it from the post office to your home.

Glad the government got such a good deal on red tape, since they use so much of it.

wrong!

Do you open your packages at the PO in front of the PO worker? Didnt think so....SO how were you to know what was inside the box? It was a package till you knew better. ;)

Oh boy.

Firstly, no CP employee will put a gun in a PO Box, it's generally not physically possible. They will leave the card with bar code and track number which you have to take to the post office. As is the case in many rural towns, the PO boxes and post office are in the same building, so you just hand the friendly postmaster your card and she hands you the package after you sign. The reason the package isn't in your mail box is because you should have to sign for it and it won't fit.

The issue here is information the OP received from the CFC in regard to sending a handgun, not picking it up, so we really don't need to discuss that aspect, do we?

An incompetent CFC employee erroneously informed the OP and they are dead wrong. It is perfectly legal to ship a restricted firearm to a PO Box, end of story.

I just picked up a package from canada post today. Called and got an ATT from post office to home. Post office doesnt need to know jack. Grabbed parcel. Signed for it. Drove it home.

ATT took 1.5 minutes from start of call til I had the email on my blackberry.

what part of this isnt required didnt you understand? Sure you may have been given one, but it is unnecessary.

Ok jdman, now pretend I'm the judge and you have to convince me that you were too stupid to know what was in the package that you tracked from the time it was mailed, right across the country, and remember, to convict, I only have to think that it was reasonable for you to believe there was a restricted in the package.

OK, I'm ready, go ahead

well for one, i dont sit at the computer tracking my packages across the country. My mail gets here when it does. If you feel the need to do so, by all means do it.

d:h:

Now back to you, show me where it says you need an ATT to go from the mail to your house...It is not required, you only need one from your house to the mail, to MAIL a gun...

You know, for the five minutes it takes to get a temp ATT, why take the chance. CYA. If all your paper is in order all the time and there is no "gaps" in the custody of a restricted firearm, the investigation ends there. Start screwing around because your excited to get your new toy home and for some reason you draw the attention of the CFO's office or the police, the " I didn't know it was a hand gun, even when I've been waiting for one all week " story won't go over so well. Promoting the sport means giving others the correct information, (unlike what the CFC told the OP) thats why we come here.

COOL!!!! So there's no more waiting to take restricted's home? I don't need a temp ATT to get a gun from the store to my home?? wow, I didn't know that they changed the laws that required a new gun being transported to your residence for the first time didn't require a Temp ATT

I know you can play "dumb" all you want, all I was trying to point out is the "legally acceptable" way of transporting a firearm and it is best to go to your home so if you're there, no temp ATT required, plus gives you time to track the package to verify what it is to get that temp ATT just in the off chance you get pulled over for speeding or a burnt out tail light on the way home. My nickname is CondomBoy because it's always better to be safe than sorry, and if you're going to play, play safe. I like to protect myself and have that extra little piece of paper, if you want to risk transporting a restricted firearm without proper documentation, it doesn't matter to me until the laws get stricter and then it affects us all.

Do you have to get the temp ATT? yes, can you get away without it? maybe. Is it worth it? To you... apparently.

Anyways, back on topic, CAN you get it shipped to a PO Box? Yes, does it give you an extra hoop to possibly jump through? yes.

You couldn't be more wrong! anytime you transport a restricted, you must have an ATT Your typical Ltatt does not cover post offices. You can find this information in section 118 of the firearms act, or look at the RCMP firearms act FAQ. It is very clear.

Back to my role as a judge, you have not convinced me that you were certain that the restricted you were expecting was not in the package you picked up at the post office.

You can roll your eyes all you want, I like to track my packages, I buy a lot of stuff privately and by using the tracking info, I can sometimes pop home from work in time to receive the package and avoid the pita att all together.
