Shoot or Pass on This Deer?

Are you trying to impress everyone with the size of deer on your property - perhaps with the idea of making them envious and jealous?

Had a guy like that at work once. Didn't allow hunters on his land but would show pictures every hunting season of the deer on his land to co-workers who were hunters.

Finally folks caught on and said they were not interested in seeing pictures of deer they would never get to hunt anyway.

Some folks are funny that way.

Worked with a guy like that in Lethbridge Alberta. On the way to work one morning he found a gut pile in his driveway. Never did catch the poachers, so no telling if it was a co worker or not, but the guy sure thought it was and stopped showing pictures

Go back to your wildlife biology textbooks and understand the survival rate of older bucks. It is low. Winter can be cruel on older bucks and coyotes like them too. As well, it looks like there are several bucks that you can harvest over the long term so let them grow and let nature take its chances with those. The guide in these matters is to shoot the biggest buck you find each year as there may never be a tomorrow with any white-tailed deer especially in Saskatchewan where unpredictable winters, road kills, natural accidents and some level of poaching all exist to decimate any local deer population.

Big or small I shoot em all! I'm not really a rack hunter although if a big bucks steps out with a small 1 the big 1 gets shot!
Me too, I couldn't give a dang about antler size , it's not one of my priorities when I hunt and never has been the 50+ years I have been hunting them, in fact it is not even one list at all except to figure out what tag I will put on it if I do kill a deer .

This. Odds of survival start dropping drastically after a buck hits maturity.

I never assumed they hunt or don't hunt. I'm saying I am considering taking a Liberal or NDP member hunting. Or maybe a vegan or animal rights activist/anti hunter. Do you know any Liberal or NDP members that don't hunt and would like to? Help them get involved in the sport if you can. Be a positive influence. Educate them around hunting and guns.

You are full of shyte...

I'd say that he's there, if you get a crack at him. But if he gets away and makes it through the winter then he will probably max out next year. Could get gnarly with another year under his belt, but there's a lot that can happen in the next year.

It’s the history of his posts…

I have a bigger pair of horns sitting in a bowl on my coffee table in front of me right now. Therefore you should cull it before it affects the genes of “your” deer :dancingbanana:

I’ve got 5 sets that size on the wall and I didn’t have to high fence or bottle feed any of them!

I’m hoping someday to get one worth taking to the taxidermist, so far all of mine are euro mounts.

I don’t usually collect animal parts but when I do I just hack the antlers off and leave them lying around somewhere, guess I’m not a very good trophy hunter

Looks like the antlers in my bowl came from two different deer, both are lefties. Don’t trust your vegetarian girlfriend to cull your pile of antlers. Maybe I should keep them together on the skull :dancingbanana:

I never understand why these posts with these questions get asked. Why would you give a $h1t what other people think of the deer you shoot? If you are happy with that animal then shoot it and proudly hang your tag on it and let any nay-sayers go pound sand. I don't shoot any animal to win anybody's approval. I also don't understand the people that shoot an animal then say "he's not the biggest in the woods but he'll do", sounds like you're not happy with him, if thats the case why did you shoot it?

Nice deer, me personally I would shoot that deer all day long and enjoy the memories at every meal and every time I looked at the mount on the wall.
