Hey guys quick question. I have an M&P 15 AR15 that i can only shoot with the 22 cal conversion at my range. I shoot a couple hundred rounds every week and still haven't shot any .223 rounds through it. Am i doing any damage to the gun by shooting 22 all the time and .223 only a couple times a year? I read that .22 is very dirty, not sure what the consequences are though.

You will clog up the gas tube. Every manufacturer of those 22 conversion kits recommends firing a couple rounds of .223 at the end of your range session. You need to shoot a few rounds of .223 once in awhile or if you can't get one of these

My gas tube plugged in less than 400 rounds. No worries though, tubes are dirt cheap.. highly recommend an adjustable gas block.. or ditch the conversion and buy a chiappa dedicated upper.

Those .22 AR kits are supremely underrated.

You are doing absolutely no damage and really not even wearing the rifling.

Shoot it as much as you want.

I've put thousands of trouble free .22 lr throughy AR.

thanks for the response guys.. i like the look of the adjustable gas block. would that just replace my front sight? edit.. ok i see it replaces my front sight. is there a standard size or would i have to use calipers and see the diameter of my barrel?

Why bother with the adj gas block? Have you had problems because you didn't have one? What "problem" would it solve for you? A non-existent one likely.

Its another unnecessary bell and whistle in my opinion. Use the money to buy ammo.

My LMT 14.5" AR-15 has a sling and an EoTech. Period. No rail, no vertical front grip, no other accessories.

It still seems to shoot great, against all odds.

I agree. I've put 700-800 rounds through mine in a day with no pluggage, fire two rounds of 223 and go home.

I recently purchased the CMMG coversion kit for my AR. My indoor range doesn't allow the shooting of regular load .223 but does sell frangible .223 in boxes of 20. After a brick of .22lr I load up a mag of the frangible ammo and blast away to clear the gas tube. What I don't shoot must be kept in the range vault.
When I'm shooting in Barrie.....223 is all I shoot.

They sell you frangible ammo and you have to leave it there when you go home? That sounds a little wierd... Its your ammo, take it with you when you leave...

My understanding is it's illegal/prohibited for civilians to have. If it's purchased and shot at an approved range then it's ok. At least that's what the range told me.
It's also expensive at $26/box of 20rnds:eek:

Frangible is not illegal. If it was and they were selling it to you at the range, they would kinda get in a world of s**t; regardless of you leaving it there when you are done. TSE sells frangible ammo and Wholesale Sports and most other shops sell the Barnes MPG bullets, which are frangible. They are feeding ya bulls**t... Take your ammo home with you!

Continuing the tangent this thread has taken

I happen to have an empty box of IVI Green Shield. On top of all of the usual ammunition warnings, it states "Intended for Law Enforcement and Military Training under supervision only

KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN-NOT FOR CIVILIAN USE"

The range you attend may be interpreting this in a strict sense if the ammo they supply has the same warning. That is , if you were caught by LE with this ammo and the range supplied it to you, they would be in some sh*t.

That being said, do you get to use the rest of the box of ammo next time to go to that facility or is it forfeit to the range?

Now I have no idea why this warning would be in place other than the ammunition supplier does not supply/sell to civilians (I believe this is the case with IVI). As such, civy with that ammunition would have to receive it from illicit means. Hence the warning to protect the ammunition manufacturer from accusations of sale to civilians.

Yes, my name goes on the box and I can shoot it when I want. As a member, I don't want to mess with my status. Rules are rules.....

So...can I purchase frangible .223 from TSE or WSS? Any idea what it costs?

Frangible ammo is expensive but I haven't priced it in a while. Try TSE. I remember seeing it on their website a few years ago. A small reloading company in Burnaby BC called Oma used to sell reloaded frangible ammunition years ago. DVC ventures in Port Coquitlam may sell it too.
