Shooting a coyote....?? Did I do it right?

Next time you'll check to be sure it's dead. Take it as a learning experience.
If the game moves out of site, generally, you should give it time to go lay down and die. If it drops right in front of you, as yours did, don't take your eyes off of it, until you have inspected it, and know it's dead.
The stories of deer, and other game, that have walked or run off, after being declared 'dead' are numerous. We've all heard variations of the deer that ran off with the hunters rifle in it's antlers while he was taking a picture.
Get a stick, and poke it in the eye, boot it in the ass if you're brave, but do not just trust it's dead.

Well, sounds like you are having fun! I just know I'm gonna regret selling you that scope.......:D

I can also attest to how tough 'yotes are. I hit one with a 165 gr Nosler ballistic tip, from my .308 (which I'm also regretting selling.....) at a hair under 100 yrds ranged. Hit him quartering away about 4" behind the front right leg, center/low body. Round mushroomed very nicely, and made a massive hole out the other side front of left shoulder. He went over 120 yards before he piled up, running on 3....the sheer volume of blood and froth in his mouth/nose should have indicated an instant kill. Both lungs, and could have even creased the heart for all I know. Tough critters. And then again, I've seen them dropped stone dead with a .22 Mag at over 100. Go figure.

I always poke any animal in the eye with the muzzle, round chambered safety off, if it flinches at all I pull the trigger. My good buddy almost got killed last Moose season by a big cow. He poked it in the eye when it jumped up he tried to chamber a round but she had him flattened out before he could cycle the bolt, he was covered from head to toe in blood/snot and had 3 bruised ribs. Never assume an animal is dead because its shot.

Fyi, i shot one 2 weeks ago with a .223 52grains bullet, a chest shot just like you, at about 200v. Even if the things dropped when hit, it went up and ran in the woods. There was no blood on the hit spot (there were snow). I circled for 30 minutes to find a blood trace, which i finally did approx 80 meters from where i shot it, and the things was dead 50 meter farter.

Poor choice.

5 minutes to check out your kill ... what difference would that make to nearly an hour for the other. The Bobcat wasn't going anywhere in any hurry.

Sometimes life happens, I didn't expect anything to happen with the coyote. But the reason I was out there was to load up the bobcat so the hotshot guy could take it to a site.
Not sure if you have ever hired a hotshot, but they are not cheap, that bobcat was going somewhere in a hurry.

I wouldn't kept looking. Takes a bit of practice to track down wounded game. Aint no better candidate then the one with a fist size hole in them.

happens all the time...
the shock of the impact dropped him and when you weren't looking he shook it off and crawled off to die.
those fast movers carry good energy and it gets transferred to the animal on impact...kinda "short circuits" things for a bit.
