If the game moves out of site, generally, you should give it time to go lay down and die. If it drops right in front of you, as yours did, don't take your eyes off of it, until you have inspected it, and know it's dead.

Get a stick, and poke it in the eye, boot it in the ass if you're brave, but do not just trust it's dead.
