Shooting coyotes with .223 at long distance ?

I have taken coyotes and foxes from 15 paces to 550(one)paces with the 223 and 50 g ballistic tips. ONce the further ranges start to happen, it is about knowing your rifle for a good hit. As for wolfes, I have yet to shoot one in the wild but have shot a few in the snares that are still alive. Usually do this with a 22 or hornet.

How far can you shoot and reliably keep all rounds within about 6 inches ? There's you're limit.

I agree with you 100% but I wanted to know the limit of the cartridge. I was told the .223 had a limit of around 300 yards. Being that I don’t have much experience with the .223 and have read it’s great for target shooting at long distance, I wanted to find out from experience members. Now I know. Thanks guys...:)

How did the moose and deer herds ever survive before we came along with our long range rifles to protect them? I love predator hunting too, but I am not going to change my ethics just because the game has changed.

A vital shot with almost any caliber will produce death... The only limit is how far out can you make a vital shot. But with coyotes, I think what some people are saying is that you can test your limits lol. Using any of the heavy weight balistic tips will get you great long range performance.

Personaly I don't own anything under a .277 cal, I like to see results(like the a huge red spot in the snow lol)

We shoot deer & moose, if we don't thin the predator population we will upset the balance!

Testing the limit is a good thing, when the target is a piece of paper. Don't get me wrong, I hate yotes just as much as the next guy, but I also hate the idea of seeing an animal suffer becaume my aim is off that day.

Ranchers and farmers often would like all deer and geese irradicated. More money to spend in arizona in the winter and sitting in a coffee shop lol. Wolves are not the enemy lol. At one time no wolves existed in the lower 48 because all sorts of types wanted to be buffalo bill or kit carson.
Try telling that to the rancher who's losing cattle...

Just like coyotes, the only good wolf in cattle country is a dead wolf/coyote

Very true... Where we hunt, the farmers want EVERYTHING dead - Turkeys, deer, geese, coyotes, raccoons, you name it.

We have had farmers pull up and want us to kill a flock of turkeys in deer season (we hunt them during the legal season).

While it is nice to have the farmers on our side, we have to remember the optics to the anti and non-hunting people out there. There are lots of people that are not against or for hunting, but if they saw animals left to die because of marginal or questionable shots, we could easily convince them that hunters are cruel, etc.

I am far from a fan of any critter that kills deer and turkeys, but to think it is ok for them to suffer, almost like torture, is just plain wrong in my opinion.

Not only is it a quantum leap in ethics to permit or cause unnecceary suffering to animals as opposed to acting like a responsible shooter. It is also a criminal offence.

It amazes me that the wanton wounders are allowed to post their crap in here.

No animal deserves to suffer from poor shooting. Im no saint, Ive had my share of poor shots but its quite disturbing seeing a coyote suffer. I now limit myself to a max 200 yards and try chest shots 90% of the time.

Cheers!!

In my opinion, we should always aspire to finish the job as quick as possible, and I hope that the rest of you guys aren't advocating anything different.
As far as using a 223 on coyotes, I think that is a very good choice for the intended quarry out to as far as you feel comfortable sending a solid shot.

No way 223 has a limit of 300 yards. My groups just start to open up at 200 yards - the factory Steve 223 topped with an $80 Tasco shoots 2-3" groups at that distance. Tells me I have at least twice that far before hitting vitals would become a concern.

You are talking about a higher class gun probably topped with 2x classes higher optics. You should be absolutely fine at 500 yards, plus you would have an advantage of your shot not being heard if you missed.

It's not just about group size though. I'm a paper puncher too, but hunting is different than poking targets at known distance; right? I'm told it's important to stay well within your comfort zone in order to make humane kills.

Max point blank range(+/-3 inches) is 230 yards for .223

I'm with H4831 ad Senior. I don't give a sh!t where I hit a coyote. They are vermin, when I do kill them, I leave them where they die.

People at my golf course used to get upset at my attitude about them and fox until one day me and three women menbers I was playing with watched on fox trot up the fairway with the hind quarters of a house cat and the other one with the front half.

Even fox and coyote deserve chinese food once in a while!!!!!

If you see a song dog shoot it....if you think it is too far and is a safe shot shoot at it, a deer will thank you.:) A wounded coyote has a harder time hunting.

Have you ever watched a wolf hamstring a deer out on the ice??
I have!!
Humane shots on wolves is not the highest of my prioritys, hitting them is 1st & foremost :sniper:

This is friggin' hilarious! We rant and rave about how anti-hunters put human characteristics on animals and then judge whether and how they should be killed. Then hunting hypocrites do exactly the same thing when it suits them.

I have zero problem with controlling wolves and coyotes where required, and even sport and fur hunting. But to suddenly and conveniently forget our hunting ethics and say they don't deserve a humane kill is just plain wrong. Ever see a deer drive her own fawn from food? Gee, that's cruel! Maybe we should punish them too!

Now how would you feel if you knew that someone who had pest deer on their land was blazing away at them at any range, not worried about being humane or anything, because them things just gotta go, right? I bet it's suddenly different.
