"short" AR Uppers

Velocity of the round changes when you shorten a barrel, accuracy does not. So the .223 will not shoot "as far" so to say with a shorter barrel, but is still more than adequate for 100 yards with shorter barrels.

Muzzle blast and noise increases dramatically with shorter barrels, it's already loud enough on a 20".

I personally prefer the shorter barrels just cause they are much more easy to carry around, manuever and sling to your body than longer ones.

I have an 11.5" and it's been just awesome the past 2 years.

I saw brand new ones issued in Afghanistan last year with 10"

edit; maybe they were 10.5.......hmmmmm.

Well, here's another pic of the CQB model, the 2006 Colt Canada catalog i have says 10" barrel from the spec sheet, the 10.5" LMT upper i have seem to be slightly longer than that.

I cant beleive someone would actually complain about noise at a gun range. that is the same type of person who goes to the Molson Indy and complains that the cars are to noisy. I had no idea that there was an acceptable noise level for firearms. Maybe ranges should start classifiying ranges according to sound decibals

Years ago a buddy and I had a couple of Ishapore FNs and when we went to shoot them at the local range (Small town West Coast) the resident trap shooters complained about them. They did'nt like the noise and the "Rapid fire" (their words not mine)..................I could'nt understand a guy who shoots 12 Ga complaining about the noise of my Ishy......Guess that's what you guys call a "Fudd"?

I have a 29.2cm barrel, and am able to shoot out to a fig.11 target from 200m no problem (from prone/kneeling with iron sights). Granted the groupings are rather larger in comparison to firing that far with rifle-sized barrels, but was able to hit the target nonetheless. With more training, I'm sure I can improve that (w/ or w/o optics) but I'm at least confident in the ability of my shorty barrel.

Anyone play with or know how the heavier buffers affect the cycling on a ~ 14" carbine? Come on Kev, I am counting on you for an answer here. :)

I want to make a really heavy buffer to delay the bolt opening (stop if blowing crap in my face as I am a lefty) but not have to bugger around with the gas port size to ensure the rifle will cycle.

I am a machinist so making up a custom heavy buffer is a piece of piss.

As a bit of a highjack

some of the well respected gunsmith here at CGN will not cut AR barrels as they were told by CFC, it will make the rifle a prohibited device.

How does the CFC figure that a rifle barrel is MADE? How does a manufactured barrel get to be a certain length? What is the difference between manufacturing a barrel and shortening a barrel?

Every single rifle barrel on the planet started out life longer than it is now. Every single barrel is threaded, chambered, headspaced (at this point it is at a point where it can function in a firearm) and then shortened to length .... read cut down.

If a licenced gunsmith takes a barrel and cuts off a part of it to make the barrel shorter, that is manufacturing and is no different than starting from a blank.

So I respectfully submit the CFC doesn't have a fricken clue what they are talking about and are talking out of their asses because they don't like the idea of people shortening their firearms and screwing with their precious registry and the crap information contained therein.

Whoa don't talk sense. I pointed out the same thing in a thread way back and there were still some here that took issue with it.

You are correct. All barrels were cut down at some point in their lives. You can't make one otherwise. Once again the CFC is out to lunch.

Back on topic: I have a 11.5" that works great. Accurate enough for 100m that is for sure...

You want LMT's Ehanced Bolt - it has lengthened unlocking travel to increase dwell.

You can go to H3 buffers, but it really do not slow unlocking, just cycling.

Suputin and Max Power - The CFC's definition of "manufacturing" vs "shortening" goes so far as one must have a manufacturing license in order to "manufacture". See: Dlask's short 870 barrels.

You can't legally cut your barrel yourself, unless you have a manufacturing license, but then you're in the grey area of "remanufacturing" your barrel. Strange stuff.
