Hello everyone,
I have an 870 Supermag that I would like to add a short barrel to.

The ones I've seen so far are from Canada Ammo and from Dlask arms. Basically I was wondering is anyone would be so kind to post pictures of their 870's with one of these short barrels installed.

Thanks a bunch,

Eric

Bottom one is a 12" Dlask. Middle is a 14" Remington barrel. I prefer the 14", and most of the dealers are taking orders for genuine 14" Remington barrels right now.

I'm not totally sure that those work in a supermag, someone confirm?

I got off the phone with remington a short while ago and apparently yes they are compatible as long as the barrel is not a "tactical" barrel, because then they will only work with Remington's "tactical" shotguns. It's somewhat ambiguous, but as long as it does not have a "tactical" designation in the name, it should work.

First of all thanks a ton for posting a picture, that's very helpful.

I was looking at the 12 inch Dominion Arms barrel, from Canada Ammo, mainly because of the price. Do you think there's a huge difference between the DA barrel versus the Dlask 12 inch barrel aside from price?

Also may I ask why you prefer the 14 inch barrel? It looks like you have a 1 shot extension on there, is that the case?

14" just seems to feel better, and looks good with the plus one. Also, I have had it with aftermarket barrels. I have had 2 DA barrels and both of them had the barrel ring indexed enough that the bead was a couple of degrees off center. You can get genuine Remington 14" barrels for $155 or so, that is what I would go with (I actually have 2 of them on order). To be honest, nowadays I find I am swinging back to the 18" more often. Extra length means longer sight radius which means better accuracy. Also the shorter barrels tend to shoot high unless they have a taller bead or blade up front. The dlask does and the DA doesn't. I had an 8.5 DA, and if you put a straight edge along the top of the receiver, the front bead was well below the receiver which means to line up the bead you have to raise the front end which means you shoot high. The 12 is actually gone from my collection, and I currently have 3 with 18" barrels and 3 with 14's, and a custom 8.5 for the gong show at the action range (birdshot at 7 yds)

That sounds good. Thanks a lot for the info, it was much appreciated. Now I have some searching to do.

This was an 870 express magnum with a Norinco 14" barrel. I had the barrel threaded for chokes and had a pedestal bead installed. I really liked this gun and I miss it. It handled well and the flexibility of chokes helped make up for the shorter barrel. I've got a Grizzly 12.5 coming for a project so I'm looking forward to see how the 12.5" barrel handles.

Here is a 12" Dominion Arms barrel on a Wingmaster (centre)

I have 2 Rem 14" barrels on order. I ordered one from Wolverine, then saw the package deal from S&J and ordered one of those as well. I am thinking about refinishing one of them in gloss black for the top shotgun and sending the other to Tac Ord for the full Vang Comp treatment for the middle shotgun. Now I am trying to decide what sights to go with. I have always wanted these, low profile rifle sights:

I'd like a 12.5 870 barrel. Not feeling the 14" personally. If I'm going that length, I'll just grab my 18.5"

On lines with the OP's question... When installing a 3" chambered barrel on to a 870. Can it be installed on a regular 2-3/4" chambered Wingmaster, or do you need a Wingmaster Magnum receiver?

Thanks

I have the exact same question.

Is the 3" vs 2-3/4" designation dependant on the barrel only or are there different 2-3/4" and 3" receivers in the 870 Wingmasters?

I suspect that a 3-1/2" SuperMag is different but want confirmation on the regular 870 Wingmaster or Express

Receivers for 2 3/4 and 3" are identical. The only difference is the ejector spring. 2 3/4 can be converted to 3" just by changing the ejector. The only reason some older 870's were stamped magnum is that once upon a time the 3" and 2 3/4 were available at the same time and they needed a way to differentiate the 2 models. These days all 870's are 3". The supermag receivers are different, but still will take smaller chambered barrels as far as I know
