short barreled lever rifles

Just sold my 16" barrel Marlin 336 model LTS in 30-30 to a fellow CGNr. This is because I finally got my hands on an original Marlin Marauder 336RC - also a 16" barrel - in 35 Rem. Had mine out hunting a few times in the last few weeks - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LmKrR98ImY

Epps had a 336 Spikehorn 4sale on their used inventory list for about a millisecond a few weeks ago at 550 or so. Great little rifles.

BTW since Epps now have a manufacturers licence they could install a 14" or 16" tube on a Winchester legally - it would be non-restricted if kept under 26" OAL.

I have been lusting after a 14 inch lever for a while now; would they do this on a Marlin or Rossi as well? Any idea on what the price would be?

Under this license, we are able to manufacture any barrel length that is of legal dimensions based upon the restrictions of The Firearms Act.

Please note that we cannot cut down any existing manufactured barrel below minimum legal limits. This means that, for example, we cannot cut a rifle barrel below 18.5 inches, nor can we cut an existing shotgun barrel to 14 inches. We can, however, fabricate barrels of these lengths from new stock.

Sound advice; well I called and it isn't cheap. About $450 + front sight install ($50) + rear sight which I will probably have done here, going with a receiver sight. Plus the tube shortening sounds like it will run about $100. So all together looks like about $700 plus rifle. Ack!

Somehow I thought it would be a little less. I will have to see if there is some way to save a few bucks. Maybe after market short mags, maybe someone has a dusty old reciever sitting on a shelf?

Most 'smiths re-barrel a rifle and your looking at 5-800$. Sounds reasonable to me if it is a quality barrel.

It's a stainless blank, I didn't ask who the maker was although I'm sure it's decent. I guess having never put together a custom before I was slightly taken aback at the price being as much as a complete rifle.

Double Ack!! But I think I would probably be over 1200 by the time I was done. I guess depending on how much I spend on the starting point and refinishing.

Dusty old receivers? Anyone selling?.....Cheap?
 
Note that every few inches of barrel you cut results in a doubling of perceived volume and a ten-fold increase of sound pressure on your ear drums. You hear linearly, but the damage is logarithmic.

I was a fan of short barrels before, but now I like longer ones. I don't want tinnitus.

I know it's louder, but I didn't think it would be that much louder. Do you know where I could find a db chart or similar to tell what the difference is per inch or inches per given caliber. Some one must have done an article.
 
Shot my 16" .44Mag Rossi for the first time today, 45 rounds of handloads. Fun gun, tho my shoulder was getting mighty tender (t-shirt weather) by the end. Definitely a keeper.

you have to remove the spaces between the h t and the t t.
 
If you don't mind a bit of paperwork, time, and a bit more money you can import something from the states. They have made several intresting limited runs for companys like Davidsons. About a year ago I imported two Marlin model 1895 SDT 45/70 rifles with the factory 16 1/4" trapper length barrels and laminate stocks and upgraded sights. I have a 1894p in 44mag but prefer the extra thump of 45/70 for bear country. And what the heck new toys are always a good thing. Jim
 
Well my shorty is a 45/70 with a 19 inch barrel.
And it is fun to take on a walk as my bear spray.
Short and quick pointing it's great.
My fun load right now is 18 gr of Trailboss pushing a 350 gr Paper Patched bullet.
