A lever action "Assault" rifle?

Not really...

Colonel Cooper (I think) said this many years ago

“Appalachian Assault Rifle.” Lever guns today have the advantage of a non-threatening, familiar appearance which “doesn’t scare the natives. In 19th Century close quarter battle, lever actions had tactical advantages, offering a large magazine capacity and rapidity of fire compared to single-shot breechloaders and early European bolt-guns. The Ottoman cavalry and Pancho Villa agreed. A bolt-rifle magazine cannot be topped off without taking it momentarily out of the fight (Unless it’s a Krag!-Editor), whereas you can shove more rounds through a lever-action loading gate whenever you need to.

the hell whith it im calling a gunsmith to put on a 12inch berral on marliln 44mag ( Indian assault rifle just ask George Armstrong Custer!)

Hey man if you've got the dough ( as in too much!)there's a guy a little further up in Alaska that can do it up right for you.....Oh ya and Welcome to Gunnutz eh

I can understand why somone would want a light and short firearm for out in the bush, but is it really such a pain to have the 22" barrel?

The extra 8" is going to give you much higher velocities and give those 4 rounds much more stopping power, only costing you a pretty small weight penalty.

If it were me and I were using a lever action for hiking, I think I'd leave the 22" barrel and stuff it in a side saddle so the longer barrel wouldn't get caught up on brush.

I thought this site was to allow fredom of expression in regard to firearms.
Haven't you ever seen a John Whane movie? lol
if you shorten the barrel and that you have a Canadian sbr.
I am having a AIA m10 a1 lee enfild with a 12.75
I am new to this site and did not joined this site to make new friend.
Because of that work that I do I have a strong interest in firearms.
I have 32 years of experience handling firearms and believe I have a valid opinion and I can contribute to this site.
However I would like to thank those of you who have been polite
I am disappointed in some of you guys.

I am one of the dozen or so original guys on this site and couldnt agree more with you.At times I am embarrassed by others on here,I cant apologise for these fools but just consider where it comes from, it means nothing.
Enjoy the knowledge from those who know.

By the way, welcome from the ones who care

I think you would be hard pressed to get exactly what you want, but you could definitely look at a marlin guide gun. I think If you shortened the stock up a few inches, and added a quality recoil pad you might be doing good.

I know that marlin has done runs of sub 18.5" bbl guns. Is it a possibility that we could get enough interest to get a shipment of these? A 45-70 with a 16" barrel would be louder than hell, but would be pretty handy, and fun to have.

I think that is what the OP was asking about. Just as there was a limited run of .303 No.1's. Only problem is Marlins QC seems to be sh!t these days.

Old Masset?

Welcome aboard carverk.
Don't mind the bullies on here.
They pried and prodded you to find out what you were after.
Some do it more eloquently than others.
I can understand the reasoning for a short barrel given you are
dodging chopper blades.
Hell, I bought junior another .410 with a shorter barrel to save the
paint on my rig. She keeps whacking the door jam with it.
Nice totem poles from your location........old masset.
Never new such a location existed in B.C.
Regards.
Looky ;)

carverk welcome a few points to consider
-you cannot legally cut or have cut a barrel to below 18" on any long gun and stay non restricted
-talking to the Firearms Tech. for the gun registry the Rossi Ranch Hand,12" barrel 24" oal, not yet in the system, would be classified as a Restricted Rifle, you would need that license to buy one, if you had that license the Tech. thought you could permanently increase the butt stock to make it over 26" oal and change the class to non restricted, you would find that out when you actually applied to change status
-as very few people have a Resticted Rifle license the only way this would work would be for an importer to get Rossi or themselves to get the length over 26" before the rifle is classified in our system
-reading this again I should have said Prohibited Rifle not Restricted, oal is <26"

I couldnt agree more.....

some here are snobs,,,,this is a site about guns....its not an online spelling test....

Carverk, don giv no mind toos them guys. welcom toe CGN, theirs loota good info here and sum mightty nice fellers. Talk a look around, you will get some gret ideas from this sight. Mabye start a bear defence topic to get the most good helps.

When in Rome...

Another option for you is to try and get someone in Ketchikan to bring in one of the
Davidson's marlin's.
They had special runs in stainless pistol and straight grip with 16" barrels and they came in .45-70, .30-.30, as well as .45lc,.44mag and .357

You'd have to buy one used but it could be done.

Otherwise it's back to the Rossi Puma with either a 16" barrel or hopefully soon the 12.5 inch Ranch Hand...

I know that I cant cut a rifle down to 12inches but if a rifle is mamafacherd with a 12inch berral or if a gunsmith puts a custom berral on and its over 26inches non resricted just like shotguns!!

your comment on the custom barrel prompted another call to the gun tech only grey area is that the barrel would have had to have been made as a 12" if they decide this was a 26" blank cut to 12" you are in the same boat as cutting your original barrel to 12" if you call to change your firearm description from say 24" to a new 12" barrel you may have to prove to their satisfaction that the barrel was made as a 12" barrel.

I shud explane that I work on diamond drillings as a halper. The grees on the drill is candy to bears. Sum times I get hired to deal with problem bears, aswal as helicopter rigger, and bush forman . From expirence when the brush is over your head ,the shorter the rifle the beter . Grizzlys love the ugly stuf and that is wher I work. The last time I whos atack by blood craze dog that charged me!!

as long as a rifle is over 26 inches over all and whos is ither manafacherd or a custom berral put on by a gunsmith it is non-resricted just like shootguns same law (think of a rifle as a shootgun ther the same thig in the law)just like the grizzly shootguns with 12 inch berral is non-resricted! how about 10/22 with custom 12 inch berral as long as you have not cut it down and a over all lanth of 26 or better it is non-resricted

I doubt that.

This barrel regulation is the stupidest of all our gun laws or at least at the top of the pile!

Do you really think Barrels are not cut down at the factory?

if you do a custom barrel and change the registration please advise or if anyone has experience doing it where they are not dealing with a barrel imported or manufactured here under 18" please advise
