short range hunting scope options

Do you have it in hand or was it bought online? I was considering one of these scopes but I couldn't find much in the way of reviews.

it is at the postal orifice waitng for me to pick up. Will let you know

as for my budget..... I wouldn't shy away from the 1000$ ballpark but that's my ceiling.
I've got an American Defense recon mount with 1" rings but 30mm and 34mm rings can be sourced
I really am leaning towards a 1-6 with an objective in the 30 to 36mm range

It's too bad the SWFA scopes aren't available to be shipped to Canada from the USA anymore. The 1-4 illuminated is a great option for a somewhat compact scope.

I like the new Vortex Strike Eagle illuminated too. I have an older version and it's also good but I think I would prefer the new reticle.

the vortex stuff I looked at seemed heavier than other brands. I am looking at the weights of each optic that catches my eye. Still not sold on vortex

the bushnell engage arrived last week.
The clarity is nice but I haven't tried it in lesser light conditions yet.
Seems on par with other bushnell product I've owned.
2 things I noticed
-The scope comes with a flip cap scope cover similar to the butler creek ones (might be butler creek) but only at the eye ball end.... nothing on the front end... kinda weird they would only provide one scope cover. Will have to source one at a local store or online
-The other thing I notice is that the Deploy Reticle is very thin so if you have marginal eye sight... the Deploy MOA reticle may not be for you
Time will tell if the thin reticle stands out enough for hunting but I really think this reticle should paired with an illuminated center dot.
Wife's eyes are better than mine and it is mounted on her rifle so we'll see if it's going to work for her. We'll hit some crown land soon and sight it in and go from there.

I know you already use a Nikon with the bdc reticle on your Enfield iirc from previous posts, have a look at the prostaff 5 2.5-10x40 bdc. I just picked one up for my No.4, the 4-12x40 was more mag than I needed for hunting. It’s shorter overall and should be better at lower power for up close shots, x10 is plenty for me out to 200y or more when hunting if I need to zoom in.

I got a 1-4x24 Burris MTAC illuminated scope from a CGN and put it on my semi .223, I love it.

Being able to shoot with both eyes open with a true 1x is a thing of beauty.

I was going to go with a 1-6 vortex strike eagle but I didn’t like how fish eye it was at 1x and I didn’t like SFP.

I have a monarch 3 4-16 x 42 Nikoplex reticle on my 7mag. I'm actually not a fan of the Nikon BDC reticle and I think it may have led to Nikon's demise in the scope market. I see a lot of BDC reticle scopes listed on various dealer's Nikon blow out pages and almost zero nikoplex models. My enfield hunting rifle isn't scoped right now and my plan is to swap the optic between the enfield and the stag by way of an ADM recon throw lever mount. I also have a Leupold 1x14 prismatic which is awesome and I will be also using that depending on the situation. Leupold has a few models I am looking at but are sold out right now. I want an illuminated center dot too I think so am looking at the Leupold VX-5HD 1-5x24 - FireDot 4F - L171385. Little more than I want to spend though so we'll see hehehe

Ahh gotcha, I must have things mixed up somehow.

Anyway Nikon offers the same scope with the nikoplex reticle, they have the same scope in a 2-7x32 as well. The 2.5-10 is around $340 at Reliable and the 2-7 is $250 at Cabelas.

will check out the 2-7 at cabelas….. thanx for the heads up ;)

Took the rifle out with a red dot today, it didn't shoot very tight groups but seemed very consistent at a wide variety of ranges and from various positions.

I was at my range this morning to fine tune some rifles, and for the fun of it, I tried my Ruger M77-RLS MKII .358 Carbine at 300 yards. This is not a rifle I would choose for that distance but just wanted to see how it would do using a Leupold VX-3 1.75-6X32mm and utilizing the B&C reticle... it did better than I expected. This scope is also a very good choice for a short range optic, as you give up very little on the low end, but I find a significant difference on the high end, more than the numbers would indicate, as compared to the VX-3 1.5-5X20.

Didn't need to test at 300... bear was shot at 20 @ 1.5X on the 1.5-5X20... full sight picture.

Nice bear!
As much as I like the eye relief and ease of mounting of the 1.5-5, I prefer a 3-9 over anything lower.
But I don't shoot much big game at 20 yards with a rifle! Great job!!

that's a great picture, thanx for chiming in.
I keep shying away from the 1.5-5 x 20 thinking the field of view will be too small but I'm pretty much satisfied that I should put it near the top of the list.
I've owned leupold glass before and could never get a clear focus and figured it was my eyes. Bought them used when they came with the rifles I was buying..... perhaps the scopes were knock offs (?) I'll have to go find one in a shop somewhere and try again.

I’d confirm your eyepiece is properly adjusted for your eye, Leupold is one of the more trouble free options I’ve used. Have a 1-4x20 and a 1.5-5x20 Mark 4 and both are tied for my favourite hunting scopes. At 1x or 1.5x can snap shoot targets at 15 yards shotgun style comfortably, without realising you looked through the scope.
