short range hunting scope options

I wish the 1-8 30mm scope would catch on with the hunting manufacturers, getting one with an illuminated heavy duplex instead of a busy 223/308 reticule would be amazing

I’d confirm your eyepiece is properly adjusted for your eye, Leupold is one of the more trouble free options I’ve used. Have a 1-4x20 and a 1.5-5x20 Mark 4 and both are tied for my favourite hunting scopes. At 1x or 1.5x can snap shoot targets at 15 yards shotgun style comfortably, without realising you looked through the scope.

my leupold prismatic adjusts easily for my eyes and I shoot both eyes open but the two other scopes I had, a fixed 10 and a 3-9 x40 just wouldn't focus for me. was frustrating and is why I bought the monarch3 Nikons. I'm going to give leupold another shot.

VX-R 1-4 x20
I love this scope. I like it with the German #4 reticle.
I often dont use the illuminated fire
dot in regular daylight but comes in handy @ dusk or dawn. I find this scope being a 30mm tube brings in decent light at dusk or dawn. I normally hunt with it on mag setting #2.
Bright optics with ample eye relief and a more than generous field of view at all magnification settings. If you dont want to spend the 800.00 + look at Leupold VX-II 1-4x20
Awesome bush scope.

the bushnell engage arrived last week.
The clarity is nice but I haven't tried it in lesser light conditions yet.
Seems on par with other bushnell product I've owned.
2 things I noticed
-The scope comes with a flip cap scope cover similar to the butler creek ones (might be butler creek) but only at the eye ball end.... nothing on the front end... kinda weird they would only provide one scope cover. Will have to source one at a local store or online
-The other thing I notice is that the Deploy Reticle is very thin so if you have marginal eye sight... the Deploy MOA reticle may not be for you
Time will tell if the thin reticle stands out enough for hunting but I really think this reticle should paired with an illuminated center dot.
Wife's eyes are better than mine and it is mounted on her rifle so we'll see if it's going to work for her. We'll hit some crown land soon and sight it in and go from there.

I picked up a Bushnell Engage 3x9 through EE, same reticle. When I held it up towards any skyline those thin reticles almost disappear with my eyesight.
Posted it back on EE 10 minutes later. Too bad, it was a good deal.

Ya we will see how it performs in the field here shortly.
I bought the engage for the wife's rifle so we will see if she has any troubles with the reticle when we get out for sighting in and shooting practice.
If she doesn't like it I will keep it for a grouse gun I could use a newer scope for. (22LR)

I have used 3-9x40 as the usual standard on hunting rifles over the years.
The hunts the required optic will be used on will primarily be very short range. The location is heavily forested with lots of undergrowth and old growth trees. It's a steep mountain draw and I ambush hunt either on the ground using natural cover or in the treestand. max visibility is 50 yards and sometimes even on 3 power it's hard to track the animals as they come down the mountain thru the draw. The 1x is great for this but the rifle could be used for other hunting (moose/elk) so having a 1-6 range would be ideal. Max hunting range for this rifle will be 300 yards but it will be primarily used for the up close and personal stuff.
The 1.5-5 x20 leupold is on the list
also looking at a bushnell tactical 1-6 x 24
also looking at similar scopes from vortex but I not sold on this brand just yet.
