Short range thumper suggestions.

:) Thanks guys and keep the input on Bear meat coming. I have brought your comments on the subject ;) to the attention of my lovely lady.

If you were closer I’d hook you up with a pack of sausages and a pack of burger meat so the wife could see what it taste like, mine was a bit cautious at first but after she made pätê she was game to give the sausage and burgers a try. In the end if we didn’t like it I was going to make dog food out of it, wasn’t going to let it go to waste regardless of how it tasted.

Friend of mine refers to my 9.3X57 as a 358 Winchester Magnum. ;)

I think were all gonna regret not picking up a few cheap $225-275 9.3x57's from tradex in a couple years from now, (assuming you guys haven't bought some yet) its basically a 358w in a mauser action and cheap.

:)Good thought and much appreciated in working towards a solution for my;) 'present' road block. I'll keep working on her:).

I had Bevan King barrel me up two 9.3X57s way back in the 1980s. I already had a couple of 9.3X62s, but was intrigued with the '57 factory load getting over 2000fps with 286 gr bullets at only 37,500 pressure. This, to be safely used in the 88 Commission rifles.

Lo and behold, guess what happened when loaded them to over 50,000 in 98 Mausers? We had the 286 gr Norma Dual Core going a bit past 2200. That's faster than the original 9.3X62 factory loading that made its debut in Africa.

A component purchase this morning from T.E.C Trade Ex brought back the reasons and;)logic behind my purchase of what I plan on using for spring Black Bear. When I decided to acquire a 9.3x62, ;).366 Wagner, I decided to get one in a full wood Mannlicher style. A style of rifle I like, but only in European calibres. I picked up an 'inexpensive' Zastava, and was AMAZED at the accuracy with my first couple of handloads and using bulk 285gr prvi SP bullets!!! Prior to getting the rifle, at gun shows primarily, I acquired a decent selection of bullets, brass and set of dies. I never got any further than the initial handloads with the 285gr prvi bullets, IMR 4320 or IMR 4064 and Lapua brass. Groups at 100yds of under 1"!! Can't see me doing any better, considering the rifle quality level and that of the prvi bullets. Anyway, a call to Trade Ex, I decided to increase my inventory of prvi bullets and picked up the last 200 they had. Also found out, apparently they no longer have any 9.3x62 M-70 full wood carbines. Oh, the components I've gradually accumulated, primarily at gun shows are;
- 285gr prvi bullets
- 286gr Barnes TSX FB "
- Norma 231gr "
- Norma 286gr "
- Speer 250gr "
- 290gr Martix " (since traded to a friend)
-Lapua brass New brass
- Norma brass Once fired
Now,;) to 'convince' my lady:).

I looked at those yesterday and tried to buy them after work today, but you beat me to it. :(

I believe it was yesterday afternoon when I checked their website. Then, they had seven boxes listed as available. I called in this morning with the intent of picking up a couple of boxes. At that time, I was informed they only had two boxes left so I jumped on them.

Thank you for a post on topic!!! Let’s see more short thumpers! All these distractions.

Sorry for hijacking your thread with the 'distractions'. They were all tied in to one of the 'short thumpers' I have which is why I made mention of them. The intent wasn't to take away from the topic of your thread but to add to it. Again, sorry.

Hey no problem
I read it all and enjoyed it. My wife isn’t interested in black bear either so it was a good read! Just was good to see a thumper pic!!

Since the photo bucket  'screw up' a while back, I haven't, yet, made other arrangements for posting photos. I did e-mail one of the posters on your thread, a photo of the
thumper I have that I made mention of as well as photos of my initial targets/handloads. My thumper in question is an 'inexpensive' Mannlicher style Zastava in 9.3x62. With that 'inexpensive' rifle coupled with 'inexpensive' 285gr prvi bullets, has given me 3 shot groups UNDER 1" @ 100yds!!!!

That’s very good. I’ll post some pics when Jane time but I’m about 1.5” at 100y with 220gr RN at 2340fps out of the new Kimber Adirondack in 308 which I’m happy with. But the Ruger is grouping at least as good but not as light of course. So what to do?? Keep both? Sell one??
