Short range thumper suggestions.

Speaking of bears, I mean short range thumpers .........

My Dad used this short range thumper to thump this bear that needed thumping as it was raiding our camp.

Looks like it could be one.

I saw a few of those 30-30s in Ontario deer camps about fifty years ago.

At a very young age while living in Edmonton in the early 50's, a frequent shopping stop I seem to recall, was the Army & Navy store. If memory serves correct, in the basement section there were racks of rifles, primarily military surplus. That different looking bolt configuration was on a number of rifles in the rack, I'm positive.

The shirt your Dad has, looked VERY familiar. I have a drawer containing clothes from my logging days in Gold River. Many of these items, along with a pair of Pierre Paris caulk boots, I kept for hunting. Some of what's contained there are;
- Shortened GWG red strap jeans
- Shortened fisherman wool pants
- Gray 'West Coast Cashmere' Stanfields
- Stihl suspenders
- Check shirt. ;) Looks the same as your Dad's.

I have no idea what that rifle was. That was way before me. The only rifle I ever saw my Dad own was a short range thumper Jungle Carbine.

That be an '89 Swiss fer sure. I've seen numerous 30-30 conversions of these in my area over the years and shot a few as well. Nicely made actions, though they be kinda quirky lookin' to many folks. The ones I shot had decent barrels on 'em that grouped well enough at woods ranges. Not an action one would want to hot rod loads in, but they make for a good woods gun.

I'll second the short to mid range thumper in 308...

It would make short work of anything with in the 30 to 80 yard range easy... one would think that stretching a shot out past that yardage would work as well...

The good old bush rifle with a hand full of frugal ammo makes life simple...
