Shorten PAL Approval Times

Just called in and did my interview. Got my application number and have asked my references to call in.

My timeline:
Non-restricted course: Aug 13
Restricted course: Aug 14
Application mailed with test results: Aug 15
Application received: Aug 22
Appeared on site: Sept 14 (22 days)
Interview done: Sept 14

Current Status: Your application has been processed and your licence has been issued. If you have not received your licence within 2 weeks please contact the Canada Firearms Centre Toll Free number. (1-800 731-4000)

Thanks guys!

Congrats!

Call the Ontario CFO on Friday and ask for your PAL number. Once you have your number you can start buying some toys. That's what I did and my rifle and PAL arrived in the mail on the same day. :D

Slowing but surly. :p

The application number that you mentioned - is it same number that is posted on the CFC website? I wasn't given an application number and just asked my references to refer to CFC website application number. It worked just fine.

The number on the CFC website had extra digits both in front of and behind the number given to me on the phone. The middle sequence is the same though.

Both my references have called in, what next? No change on the website. By my calculation, 28 days from receiving the application would be the coming Monday, the 19th. Do I call them before then to check?

Assuming that the CFC was satisfied with all of the interviews they forward your application to your provincial CFO office. The CFO does their checking (who knows what they check) and provide the final approval. In Ontario once approved, all PAL's are printed on a Thursday and mailed out on the Friday. In Alberta your milage may vary.

Once your CFO approves your application the CFC website status will change to "issued". In Ontario once it is in a "issued" status we can call the CFO and ask for our PAL number. We can now then begin our non-restricted buying spree. :D For restricted firearms everyone wants to see your PAL.

The short answer to your question is... there is nothing you can do until the website changes to "issued". The only exception is if it doesn't change to "issued" within a reasonable period of time - you can call your CFO to see what the delay is. What is reasonable? I'm not sure, perhaps someone from Alberta can chime in.

sorry guys, trying to save time on this topic, went through several pages but do not see an answer to my question. i have let mine expire(non r PAL), sent in early august and last night doing some internet banking see a cheque cashed for $60 to receiver general... went on line and see " Your application has completed initial processing. It is now in progress. Please check the status again at a later date", no references called nor I. what are your thoughts ?

thanks in advance, want to get out bird hunting soon.

So since you were only charged $60 you applied for PAL and not RPAL, so your references will not be contacted. Initial processing complete means its been reviewed for clarical errors and they're happy with it. Under processing means they're scanning your pic, and then off it goes to your CFO. They will conduct your criminal records check, anf then grant the final approval after they're happy with everything. Once that's complete, you'll see a message that your PAL is granted and in a week or two you should receive your new plastic.

My thoughts are that all fees for previous holders of a PAL have been waived. How long has your PAL been expired?

That's not true. I only applied for my PAL and me and both my references were interviewed !

If you skim over the last few pages, it seems like around 22 days is when you can expect it to pop online. Mine was 24 days.

There is no magic question, it just an inquiry. They ask the same questions as you have on the site except your birthplace. Just be patient, and it'll all be good. Hope your CFO is much more efficient and friendly than mine though!

Yep, 22 days here before it appeared online. Until that time the stuff is just sitting in the unopened mail pile so no amount of calling is probably going to speed that part up, but what it will do is let you know if the application is being processed BEFORE it appears online which will save you a few days.

Waiting is hard :) but you just gotta move on and do other things to no think about it ;)

Quick question. Does my spouse have to call in (she signed the sheet and all - but then, so did my ref's...)?

Thanks.
