So basically until you have card in hand you're not buying anything?
Depends on the gun store you're buying from. Bullseye was accomodating because I live 2 hours away. I told them my license is in the mail, so they started running down their inventory of 9mm to me. I handled each one and fell in love with the PPX. It was on sale, so they said I can put $100 down to reserve it and when I get my PAL number I can give them a call so they can initiate the transfer. Got a call back the same week saying the transfer is approved, 30 day STATT has been issued, and the gun is ready for pickup or delivery. Whether it's a pickup or delivery they need to see the front and back of the PAL card. So, if you're eyeing a firearm that's on sale or only 1 left in stock or something, give the store a call and see what they can do for you.

All things added up it seems that until you have your card in your possession you won't be buying anything. So calling the cfo for your PAL number seems pointless.
Edit: I understand the part about calling the stores and them being reasonable with you but I'm coming from the angle of whether it's possible upon approval to get your number from the cfo and buy whatever you want and then have your guns good to go by the time your license comes.

when i was waiting for my card to come in, i got my number from the cfo, even she said it was pointless to have jsut the number as you cant buy a gun with out showing your actual card, its a legal requirement according to them,

Yeah. I was hoping I could buy online and have it delivered in time for my license but I didn't even see the two potential problems:
1. The guns arrive before the license, which I can't have in my possession without my PAL.
2. The license arrives before the guns, which makes the whole thing pointless anyway.
May be better suited for the legalese section but I'm pretty sure most online sales don't require a PAL scan. The license arriving before the gun doesnt make it pointless as it takes time for the transfers etc to go through, assuming its restricted. Point 1 may be valid. I have ordered guns online before (non-restricted) and no scan was required. From wolverines website, no mention of scanned PAL but I could be wrong.

In my situations (only bought restricted so far), the dealer has asked for the RPAL # and they check online/phone into the CFP to make sure it's valid.
So technically you could. However with firearms and our somewhat backwards law I'd advise against it. Let's say you miss the delivery and it goes to the post office. Ok cool now I need an ATT to get it from the post office to take it home. They issue it. You get your package and you happen to get pulled over on the way home without your RPAL. They could chuck the book at you.

Dec 24 - Showed up online "in progress"
Dec 24 - faxed copy of cfsc results
Jan 2 - "Completed Initial processing"
Jan 20 - I called and asked for an update as nothing had changed in almost 3 weeks. I was told my app was with Ontario CFO waiting for approval and photo scan.
Jan 22 - Checked online status this morning. "Licence has been issued"!
67 days from the time I mailed my app to issued. Christmas may have delayed it a bit. Either way now it's just waiting for the card in the mail. I hope my time line helps give other members currently waiting for the non restricted pal. Thanks.

Did it say online anything about being with the CFO or was it always "Completed Initial processing"
Mine has said "Your application has completed initial processing. It is now in progress. Please check the status again at a later date." for 2 weeks and when I call they say its just in progress no reference check yet.

Mine was the same as bigdeer. It went from "Completed initial processing. Currently in progress" to "issued". It sounds like yours should be getting issued soon.
When I call in they say they are still not ready for a reference check.

Yeah sorry...mine was only for PAL not RPAL. I did not need my references called etc. My timeline was 67 days for Non-Restrcited PAL. I have no idea how long the RPAL process will take.
