Shorten PAL Approval Times

I live in Alberta and submitted my renewal on June 9th 2022. My license has now expired as of my birthday, right in the middle of hunting season. I have sent an email and called, they confirmed they had all my paperwork and would send this off to the AB, CFO. my status states "Application received on 2022-06-09

We have completed the initial review of your firearms license application. If additional information is required, you will be contacted. Please check the status again at a later date.

Anyone else in the same boat?
Any help would be appreciated! I need to start request permits to travel to the states and UK for some matches.

So been trying to get through to firearms program and for a couple days it was system down and now the menu is back up but the moment I finish pressing 2 for all other inquiries, the call is instantly disconnected? Anyone else having this issue?

Did you applied online or if it was a paper application?

3 of us took the course together. My PAL arrived in approx 4 months. The other 2 people started calling when theirs didn't arrive at the same time. One had forgotten to sign the back page and they said that the other person's was sent to the police for their part of the check. The 2nd PAL arrived at 8 months, and the paperwork for the signature arrived at 8 months as well. So if it takes another 4 months that will mean a full year to process. It took them 4 months to stick a piece of paper in an envelope and mail it.

I'm guessing mine was so "fast" because I work for a place that has stringent background checks so was already pretty much vetted.

Good Morning,

I'm curious if folks are finding the online application is getting quicker processing than the paper version? Other than each reference having to create the GC key its seems pretty smooth. Hoping it helps speed up my Pal/Rpal. Also curious if having a Nexus card helps as they've already got some background info on file?

Thx

Are you sure they're disconnecting and its not just going silent, They love long pauses as far as I can tell but if you stay on the line eventually you start hearing messages while you wait.

I did my application online and from doing the Course mid November I got my PAL in February, so 2 months from when I submitted it.
Found the process quite seamless other than the GC key stuff.
from what I have heard the online is way faster than mail stuff in from the sounds of it.

So things might be turning around for the better OR I’m just an extremely lucky ash-whole. Here my PAL timeline:
-Jan 26, 2023: sent my letter in express mail.
-Jan 29, 2023: letter was received.
-Feb 1, 2023: money was withdrawn from my account.
-Feb 16, 2023: primary investigation was complete.
-Feb 28, 2023: secondary investigation was complete and license was on the way.
-Mar 6, 2023: received my PAL in the mail.

The last thing I want is to discourage the folks who’ve been waiting for months on end. Maybe I just got lucky. Maybe the time it takes to get a license is gone down. Regardless. I hope this cheers people up or gives others hope!

I also applied online and had my application approved immediately after the 28 day waiting period

- Feb 5th 2023: submitted online
- Mar 5th 2023: initial assessment complete
- Mar 6th 2023: approved and license issued
- Mar 14th 2023: license received in mail

Gather signatures online is just entering your reference's emails in the online application, they'll get an email with instructions to login with GC key/banking and they'll have a disclaimer to read. Then they just enter their name and submit.

That's a really quick turnaround. I guess BC and QC CFO are much faster or have lower volume than here in Ontario.

Yeah, I was surprised that it was that quick. I see expected them to take at least a week once the waiting period was over to call references and what not, but I decided to look at the portal the day after and was approved.

Happy for you. That is insanely fast...especially for snail mail. Prayers and thoughts for me....ha

Any suggestions on how to get through to the CFO?

Callling 1-800-731-4000 at 9am BC time Monday morning. Keep getting .. 'our office is currently closed' ...???

The BC CFO can be reached at 1-800-731-4000, then hit 1, 1 again, and then extension #9530.
