Shorten PAL Approval Times

Well I've FINALLY got my PAL! I'm from B.C. and here's my timeline.

I also called once a month from Feb to July with the most recent call being on July 13th. Had I not been a bit more firm with the last phone call I don't think it would have been issued so soon, but I was polite and explained my situation, but stressed the time I've waited and the circumstances at hand(Moving to a new province and hunting season coming up)

Thankfully I live with my brother who has his PAL and has helped jump start my collection ahead of time.

Congrats CS, what was up with the extra long in progress? Any ideas?

I had checked yes in relation to Mental health and I had a letter explaining everything. The thing I had a problem with wasn't the time, it was having no idea what was actually happening and being in the dark still after calling them.

UPDATE: Finally received the PAL in the mail. It's been a long arduous journey to finally arrive at this point. Words or advice. Follow the 4 P's

1) Be PROACTIVE Follow up with the call centre. Don't wait for them to call your references.Get the references to call as soon as the app appears on the website. Check to see that there is nothing else that they need.

2) Be POLITE No explanation needed here.

3) Be PHOTOGENIC. Make sure that the photo matches the required specs. I lost about 3 weeks getting another photo to them

4) Be PATIENT. We are talking goverment here and you know they move at their own pace. It takes about 28-30 days for the application to show up on the website after the RCMP has received it

I was bored and decided to create a small app to monitor my applications status via the RCMP's website, it will send me an hourly SMS + an sms if the status ever changes.

https://i.imgur.com/QcFwqho.png

If there is any interest in this I can post it up on github, I'm pretty sure its against their terms of service but its no different than hitting f5 every few minutes.

Thats pretty cool.. I'd love to give it a try!

I've posted my quick and dirty hack to github here:

https://github.com/CdnHkyGuyEh/PAL_Poller

Disclaimer: right now you need a visual studio environment or equivalent to build it and use it. I can look into making it a forms app if i have time which will make it far more user friendly. You also need to setup a twilio account to be able to send SMS notifications...

Right now it also doesnt handle the SAML authentication that GC Key does, as it was far too much effort for a app i was just going to use myself. To get around it I log in with my browser, and copy and paste the session values into the code, then run it. This I've only had to do once each morning, and it seems to run until ~10pm each night without issue). This is again something I'm sure could be automated if people were so inclined, for me the work:reward ratio wasnt there.

If your still here, I'm now surprised...

Obligatory timing post. This thread helped me figure out the wait times so hope this helps others. I applied for the RPAL in Alberta, my wife applied for PAL.

Completed PAL and RPAL Courses on May 7-8.
Both applications sent on May 9 via expedited post.

Both applications appear online on June 20 and indicate that the applications were received by the RCMP on May 15

Wife didn't have any reference calls for PAL.
Wife's status shows as license issued on June 25.
Wife's license arrives in the mail on June 29.

Reference 1 for me calls on June 21.
Reference 2 for me calls on June 26.
My status shows as license issued on June 27.
My license arrives in the mail on June 30.

Strangely, we also both received a second issued license on July 26. Not sure what that's all about.

Pal has arrived. here's my timeline.
In Vancouver
May 19-application in the post
May 24- application received in miramichi
June 28- application shows up online
July 13- pal sent to cfo
July 19- called cfo and my pal was issued
July 21- pal printed
July 27- received pal in post
69 days
No references called, no extra info needed.
constant polite hounding hurried it up for sure, when I called the cfo they issued it there and then.

Interesting to note: I was confused seeing these kinds of comments on this forum, i.e. "called CFO and they approved over the phone" or "called CFO and status changed shortly thereafter" because it doesn't seem to work that way in AB.

Good on ya,

Cheers

My non-restricted PAL application has been with the AB CFO since July 13th, still no change online and no references contacted. Every time I call, I get the same "your application is now with the province" & "we do not need any references to call in at this time" run around. Is there a specific number I could use to contact the AB CFO?

**Please note, I do have a recently separated check mark, which is probably causing the longer than usual delay**

Must've been lucky timing because I called AB CFO after hearing it was with them for final approval and even went to their office location in downtown Edmonton and each time they said they're still looking at it... I think it was about a month from the time it went to their office till it was actually approved in my case.
