Shorten PAL Approval Times

I just contacted the CFC to check the status of my app and was told that it was with the CFO. I then contacted the CFO's office and the nice lady there checked out my app then said that the background checks were being done. She told me around a month to fully process. This is getting really annoying, the RCMP had my app for a month. Doesn't the RCMP do the background checks and the CFO simply approves the app?

I am apparently going throgh the same backround checks in Alberta.. i have been in a backround check for OVER 45 days thats just with the CFO alone they received my app (the CFC) that is, on Feb 20th..

I'm getting really tired of this waiting ####.. the CFC does a backround check why the CFO now?

and I have no criminal record.

Have you done your interviews yet, or is this still all ongoing before they interview you?

Sweet!! I'm good to go! Alberta is awesome. Within 2 minutes of my 2nd reference calling in I checked the RCMP website and my RPAL was approved :D:D

Current Status: Your application has been processed and your licence has been issued. If you have not received your licence within 2 weeks please contact the Canada Firearms Centre Toll Free number. (1-800 731-4000)

My current timeline for reference:

Mailed: 2012/03/20 regular Canada Post
Application Received on: 2012/03/26
Interview Done: 2012/04/25 ~10:00AM
Reference Interview 1: 2012/04/25 ~1:30PM
Reference Interview 2: 2012/04/25 ~2:30PM
RPAL Issued: 2012/04/25 ~2:32PM
RPAL Received: ??

To make this day even better I was at the shooting edge over lunch with a friend so he could sign up for his safety courses and I saw in the case they had a P226 9mm Enhanced Elite, the exact pistol I want. I paid for it and they have it locked in the safe just waiting for me to get my RPAL so they can do the transfer and get me the LTATT.

Does the Alberta CFO give out RPAL numbers or should I just wait for the card in a week or so?

OK, now I'm pissed. Count yourself lucky that you live out of Ontario and don't have to put up with our bs. Congrats on the PAL and your new toy!

I would call the CFO directly and ask what is going on, especially when it is taking so long. Your province does not seem to have the issues we see in Ontario so it does not make sense. At this point I am just going to pretend that I never applied because this waiting is killing me.

there must be a reason for that. Did you say Yes to any personal questions? I doubt they will do a check unless there have some records on you.

I did answer Yes to the job question because I moved out to the country but I included a paper with all the details and was not asked to clarify during the interview. Honestly though, if I was to rob something because I needed money due to no job then I would definitely not be applying for a PAL.

Hurrah! So I called the CFO (using their primary number, not through CFC) because my app was taking so long and the nice lady there looked it over. She said she would call me back later, and did 30min later saying I was now approved! Good I ended up calling, seems the CFC screwed up with my safety form or something because there was some flag on it about them, so took me 3 more weeks =\. Interesting experience.

Timeline:

Feb 5: Passed non-rest and restricted exams
Feb 9: Sent application
Feb 13: Arrived at CFC
Feb 28: App appears online, starts at arrival date of 13th
March 14: Safety results arrive
March 18: Both references called in but CFC somehow "lost" one of their interviews.
April 03: Lost interview, re-interviewed.
April 05: Transferred to CFO
April 25: Issued (after calling CFO)

I called today they wont give out your pal number over the phone in alberta.

So RCMP called me twice to interview me, any reason as to why they would?

Same questions and everything, just seemed odd. I called last week did the phone interview, then they called on fri and I told them I already did the interview and again they called today and I redid the interview on the phone.

When my reference called, they never recorded that he did the interview. They later called him again (actually calling the wrong reference) and he didn't pick up. He had to recall and re interview.

(sorry for the OT, waiting to get on with my approval process... figured this thread would have the greatest number of people who just took their tests) Anyone recently take their tests in Southern Ontario? I took both of mine on the 15th, the instructor said that I'll get the tests stamped in the mail in 2 weeks. Obviously I'm approaching 2 weeks so I called the CFO to see how it's going. Short of laughing at me, she said call back in 4-5 weeks...

Well I have never been charged or convicted of a crime.. but I am apparently waiting for my court files to get to the CFO god knows how long that will take.. any one got any ideas.. I don't suspect I will see my pal /rpal for a few months... :(

** Updated Timeline **

All right.. so here is my timeline up to this point...

March 3rd - took course and challenged exam for PAL
March 9th - took course and challenged exam for RPAL

March 22nd - completed application and gathered signatures.
March 23rd - sent application via registered mail.
March 28th - application received and signed for in Miramichi, NB.

April 18th - application shows up online (stating the missing exam results)
April 19th - receive the stamped PAL exam results in the mail.
* April 25th - received the stamped RPAL exam results
* April 26th - Faxed both results in...

Any suggestions what to do now?

ya um just so you know I did my restricted gun training and test on feb 18 2012 and just got the test back from the cfo in ontario on april 16. Then I shipped it through priority mail. I phone today (april 26 2012) and they said it won't even begin to get proceesed for another 2-3 weeks.... then it could take another 2-3 three weeks for them to process it. so you're looking at a solid 3-4 months before your license is in your hands unfortunatly bud.

Took almost 7 weeks to get my test results back. I was approved last week after faxing them in, hoping they'll come in the mail today or tomorrow! How slow is Canada Post typically from Miramichi? If they print and mail on Fridays, I'd really hope they could make it to Ontario in 5 days...
