Shorty M305 Muzzle brake, Why?

My biggest complaint about the stock M305 is the unwieldy length in the bush. I realize that a shorty would look strange without a brake, but is there other any reason not to leave it off and the barrel unthreaded? Is the legal barrel length measured with or without the brake? Or are there brake options that are so short as to add insignificant extra length? Remember my M305 is like a Mastercraft wrench from Cdn tire. It's useful and inexpensive and I have no problem modifying it visually if that gets the job done for me. I'm not discussing chopping up a collector's item, right?

Hi Emerson,

I don't know if you're still looking for a solution or not. I feel the same way you do about the flash hider, so I just chopped it off behind the veins (slots). It was then rounded off on a lathe and quick blued. My M14S is now 2.5" to 3" shorter but still has the original front sight. I believe the original spec for the M14 included a flash hider because it was select fire, and on full auto the hider would come in handy. Since full auto is evil in this country  and we can only have semi-autos, I don't feel a need for the hider. The only time I actually saw any flash was when I was shooting some South African surplus ammo. All other brands of ammo I've used produced no flash.

We cant shoot after daylight?? well thats news to me ?

where are you from ; Mars ?

p.s. in a hunting context: shooting an m14 in an indoor range with neon lights at 7 am in january does NOT count for shooting after dark when engaged in talks about a flash hiders

Legal light for hunting, I understand.
Various noise bylaws, I understand.
But as for actual firearms law? It is news to me as well.

There was a member here who posted a video of him shooting his HS50 with tracers after dark awhile back and nobody got on his case about it being illegal. And that usually happens pretty darn quick on this forum if if illegal behavior is posted.

If you aren't hunting, being negligent (which may be your biggest hurdle), or violating a noise bylaw; aren't you good to go?

after one shot from my shorty, my ears will be ringing for the next 18 hours.
Not likely, it's incredibly loud indoors but outside not so much. I mistakenly took a shot without the muffs outside and it was loud but not as bad as I thought.

My long barrel came with a flash hider but the holes aren't milled out. I suppose it would be easy to bubba the end off and leave the sight mount intact if you wanted to. I'm a big fan of the muzzle brake though, much nicer shooting with it.

I picked this gem up on the EE , and I didnt have too many problems cutting it up as it was cracked at the end it was butt ugly anyhow .I had to ask around if anyone knew anything about it but...no luck . I figure it was a homemade repair job .

My plan was to thread the inside of it and try it on a polytech after a barrel cut and thread job .But along came the Canam Ammo and Shorty deal :) I have a couple Springfield Armory brakes mounted already and I think they make a differance are a good return for the money . Brownells $89 with a castlenut wrench included.

You should do it then. Make the rifle fit you, not the other around.

Plus M305 is a heavy rifle. Remove flash hider will help for sure!

The original USGI flashhider served two purposes.
It was also intended as a muzzle brake and watching the old M14 training video confirms this. Although it doesn't seem particularly efficient in this role.
On many of the M14 forums users report a decline in accuracy after removing the flashider assuming they left they're muzzle bare. If a more efficient brake is installed accuracy is generally restored.
