Shorty/SBR Precision Rifle

Yes, what can you build that compares ( same OAL & accuracy) to the desert tech at the same price point of the desert tech?

I can buy factory rifles for 6-700 dollars that compare in accuracy in 5 round strings of fire, anything more than the quality barrel in the desert tech will definitely surpass.

I recently had built a 12.5" .308 for $2200 in a chassis that was 0.5moa off a bipod with no rear rest. A desert tech is about 10k. That's waaaay up at the top tier of price. Don't get me wrong it's a nice high quality unit but a budget shorty build can match it for accuracy.

Imo accuracy is more often than not a reflection of a shooters skills than it is of the rifle, not always, but most of the time.

lol yah, this build was like a 2 grand build.

Its a stock Winchester XPR stealth. The trigger on it is amazing for a "low end" factory rifle. We will see how it shoots!

Totally agree with the point but I just saw Crafm selling the covert for 5k. 10k is way high, even MSRP is like $6.5-7.

Desert tech srs covert is 27" over all length with a 16" barrel. You are not going to build a rifle with the same oal for less money

Price is more like 6k, 7 if you don't look for when they are on sale. My covert in 338 lapua was just a tad over 6

Finally took the Remington PCR shorty out to sight in. I'm a novice with optics but by the third group it was starting to tighten up. I will take some match rounds next time and see if it will get sub MOA. I was using cheapo bulk PMC 147gr.

I think I want one in .223 with an even shorter barrel.

Make sure you have at least 100rds of cheap stuff through it before you shoot pricey ammo. You need a bit of Copper fouling to see its true potential.

Some cool builds here.
I have a planned SBR but sure would be a lot cheaper if we could have our barrels shortened. An IBI barrel is going to cost me as much as the donor rifle.
I want to use an MDT XRS chassis so limited on actions, right now thinking .223 Rem 700/783 or a Tikka. Looking to rebarrel in 300Blk with a 13" barrel.
Been playing in MS Paint and it will come out something like this.

Here is my contribution, 308 sig cross 16" barrel. I did not get a chance to test it yet, but I expect to get consistent 1" groups or less. :)

That's a really slick design! .223 would probably be a better choice than 300 BO just because of availability. Hoping to try a XRS chassis for the next rifle I build.

Sooo, I got it...
As it stands I will run the 16.5" barrel on there till I can sell a kidney or something and rebarrel 13", decide caliber then.
Being small and light(ish) I am going to try a brake on there to help better spot my hit's/miss'.

The XRS is nice, no fear of scuffs or scrapes since it's polymer.

Fair disclosure. I'm a big fanboy of John and his swept handles.

I find it positions your hand much closer to the vertical portion of the grip. If this is good riflemanship or not, I don't know, nor do I care.

I find my hand falls very naturally from the bolt knob to the rifles grip, where with traditional set ups, there's more of a horizontal adjustment back to the portion of the grip.

Will it make you shoot faster? probably not. Will it make you shoot better? no.... but what I can say is that (for me) the rifle feels so buttery smooth and the bolt makes things feel like it's completely custom fit for me.
