Hey Gang...

Just completed another short shotgun project. I was thinking about how partial I am to them.

So, I snapped a photo and figured I would start a post.

"what is your favourite combat/tactical/Shorty shotgun?"

I'd love to see some photos of custom ones that you guys have put together. I'll get the ball rolling.

Love me a shorty 12 gauge!

Custom 870 by AAC and a Benelli Supernova at the moment. Both 14" 12g

Love a good 18.5" too for a general purpose shotgun length.

I have gone full circle on this. I used to until I moved back out to the country and got back into hunting a number of years ago. I always use ear hole pluggers on the range but pretty much never in the field. I don’t completely understand how the decibel scale works (it’s logarithmic not linear comparison between 2 numbers) but a 18” barrel sounds like about twice as loud as a 28” barrel to me. They sure do ring your ears with high brass loads if you ever have to use it for something like pest control. I don’t really see myself using short barrels for anything much in the future other than looking cool.

You should always wear hearing protection when possible and if you’re only shooting it on the range this doesn’t really matter. If you’re using it in the field and think there might be the odd time you don’t have time to put them on, 28” is honestly a lot more bearable. After switching most of my shotguns back to 28” barrels I have also found they balance and point a lot nicer. More than enough to make up for the extra foot of length, which honestly isn’t an issue for me. I might be the only around with a 870p, magpul sga furniture, tube extension, shell carrier and a 28” express barrel.

Also worth noting that 18” is the standard “short barrel” only because that is the minimum legal length in the USA. In Canada there is no minimum on pumps if it came from the factory that way. If short and compact is more important to you than anything else why stop at 18”? Lots of companies make 14” and 12.5” aftermarket barrels

That Bonnie and Clyde gun is awesome!

Thanks!!

I built that gun about 15 years ago.
I started with a Remington 11 with a decent stock but not much finish left. I disassembled the entire gun, then sandblasted all the parts. Then I used cold blue to give it a parkerized finish. I cut the barrel to 20 inches, threaded it for Rem-chokes, soldered on a front rifle site, and put on the mag tube extension.
Like the A5, it beats you up, but the rate of fire is wild!

Thanks for weighing in with your opinion, Ungrateful!

I 100% agree with you… Short shotguns have a bark of their own! Maybe something to do with less time for the explosion of the powder to settle down before it reaches the muzzle.
18 inches is about as short as I like to go… Shorter than that and the volume and recoil are unpleasant.

Shorty at one time was a Model 12 with the stock cut just behind the grip and the barrel cut just past the magazine. Carried under a long coat. The there were side by sides with a pistol grip and barrels cut just past the wood forearm.

Let see some pics of those...

My personal favourite shorty, it comes in at 17.5" of barrel with a 7 round capacity which is kind of neat. And it can get even shortier though I don't particularly love the cut off stock, it does make it handy to carry around (especially under a long coat I bet!). For roaming the really thick bush of Northern Sask, I really like it and other short barreled shotguns in general, had a Norinco 14" Outlaw and quite liked it but currently have an 18.5" Coach instead now. I guess neither of these are very tactical but I heard a robot man from the future carried something like the second picture around so that has to count for something!

And here's a weird shorty of my own making at 19" if we're talking about riot-ish lengths. I bought it with what I think was an already cut barrel from the original length, and a weird cludgey welded on piece at the end, so I did away with that.

would love some more info on the bottom one, is it a sportster?

It's a JC Higgins/Sears and Roebuck Model 583.23, one model number outside of the recalled bolt action shotguns of their line. 5 round tube fed bolt action shotgun, it is fun, weird, and goofy. It honestly works pretty good, feeds and shoots a damn, the one weird part of it for the operator is the elevator won't go up to allow you access to your tube unless you open the bolt, which is odd to come off of from typical pumps.

interesting, I have a tube fed sportster that works the same way, but the tube is inside the stock and doesn't protrude. I like the look of the tuber under the barrel, gives me some ideas to try with mine. load gate also sounds the same.
