I have no experiance with a .45, so can someone tell me about how many factory rounds I could put through a good .45 before it would need repairs. Lets say a $1500.00 1911.

Thank you.

A lot......

It depend on every single firearms not even models. Normaly the first thing to change is the recoil spring around 5000-10000rounds. It's cheap 5-15$.

If you pay 400$/1000rounds, i think you will spend a lot more on ammo vs the gun and repair.

l'ETA say your gun is weak and you only shoot 40000rounds before the "meltdown" the Cost Will be

Gun --> 1500$
Ammo --> 16000$

So don't worry about your gun, but Check your ammo Cost :)

If you're worried about your gun failing, buy a better gun. As mentioned the recoil spring needs regular replacement but the rest of the gun shouldn't. Sh*t does break and it may do so sooner than you'd like or expected. In general, a quality gun shouldn't need parts for a very long time/high round count.

In bullseye, NRA ball gun match pistols are normally expected to run 10-15000 rounds before the accuracy "falls off" enough to require re-tuning, things don't break very often.

well I know most duty wpns are good for atleast 5000rds and can be pushed pass 10,000rds

The only part that needs to be changed is your recoil spring "every 5000rds or so"

One of the old mods here had well over 100,000 rounds through his SIG P226 without replacing anything, not even recoil spring. All steel piece like a 1911 should last forever.

One of my early 1911's, a Colt Mk IV Series 70, went somewhere in the area of 80,000 rounds before I sold it. I replaced the recoil spring and FP spring every 6,000 rds, replaced one disconnector, broke one mag release spring and replaced one mainspring housing pin that sheared in half but wasn't noticed until i removed the MSH for routine maintenance. I also had to restake the plunger tube twice due to looseness (not failure).

In spite of some of it's detractors the 1911 is pretty durable, especially if you are willing to be you own gunsmith (pretty much mandatory)...

other then springs, if you keep it clean it should run pretty much forever.

In "The book of the 1911" Patrick Sweeny talked of a gun with more the 300 000 rounds thru it and still shooting in competition as his go to gun.

Keep the recoil spring fresh every 4-5000 rounds and have at her.

The 1911 model pistol is one of the most robust, well-designed, and longest-lasting handguns out there.

I don't believe there's another handgun design out there that's been in continuous military service for over 100 yrs.

Keep it clean and lubed, change the mainspring every 5000 to 10000 rounds, and enjoy it!! You'll wear out the magazines LONG before you wear out the gun.

1911s don't last forever...seen the new marine testing on them? FAIL
