shot gun for bear defence

yep, you can tell sincere people from far away.

I'm sticking with my 410.
I also considered the 22lr shotshells, but I have a hard time making the action cycle...
Hey Amphibious, how do I pattern it? 15 or 25?

Inches that is.....

I know you are just jking popcan, but lets look at that:

who said I was joking? :D

On the million to one chance anyone actually gets charged by a bear, they'll immediately forget all the sage advice given here and just run anyhow:p . Or fumble and drop all their shells, or short-shuck, or shoot wide, or whatever.

Seriously, with all the bear defence threads on this site, we ought to be the most and best prepared individuals in north america, when it comes to dealing with problem bears. Best advice I've heard on here is, "Use your brain first, gun second".

Here in the Russian arctic, we started out wearing bear bells (the Canadians).

The locals told us to take the damn things off as they would attract barren land grizzlies.

We're running silent these days, but traverse down wind and glass ahead with binoculars.

The best way to stop a charging bear is to do the helicopter with your #####. The hypnotic whirling of your flesh rocket will either put the bear to sleep in its tracks, or frighten it into a retreat. If your ##### isn't long enough to do the helicopter, THEN you may consider a shotgun as an alternative. Just my 2 cents.

I think this thread has finally spiraled into complete absurdity :D

thats fr4eaking funny man

This one girl told me that, "You don't need to shoot a bear if it comes at you, just run; they're lazy, THEY WON'T CHASE YOU"

LOLOL

870 + slug = bob's your uncle

Took my wife to a wildlife area near Riske Creek, we surprised a large brown bear, when he took off running my wife’s jaw dropped, she never realized just how fast they are, I didn’t have much problem convincing her that I needed a new 590 for work and the money comes out of the house budget and not my play budget. :D

This is the best argument ever. I have a sister-in-law who is one of those totally unreasonable hard core anti gun people. Anything even shaped like a gun cannot go in her house.

At a family reunion at the Chateau popcan last summer, she saw a bear while out jogging, and it scared her.

I asked her, if the bear was charging her, and she had her 8 year old daughter along, would she rather I had pepper spray and bells, or a shotgun?

She now has a grudging acceptance of SOME guns. I put a crack in her armor at last! :p:p

I should add......TRAIN and PRACTICE with the damn thing:eek: ......taking a bear encounter course is also a great way to "educate" one's spouse (and even us macho guy types who already know ALMOST:D everything) about potential Bear "issues".....The BEST course available now IMHO is one offered by Clyde NUNN and North American Wilderness Training out of Burn's Lake, phone #250-694-3378.....he conducts courses throughout the summer at various locations in the north-central interior....it is a two day course with a full day on the range including charging targets....well worth the money in my books....my wife now has a 358 BLR.....:D :D

and for those Bear encounter NON-beleivers,....I can't change your mind and really don't care to.....you are free to think whatever you want....but please don't try to sway others with your "opinions".....You may cost someone their life one day....

I spend my falls on the Yukon Border on my remote Trapline and have come close enough to big fellows several times to KNOW that is is best to prepare oneself for the worst possible senario.....less than 10 years ago close to where I hunt an unarmed tourist was killed and had his entire head removed by a BLACK bear.....he too felt bears were not a threat.....he paid for his opinion with his life......
