is there any types of shot i can use for duck hunting in my old 870 wingmaster that is legal. I know steel is the new standard over lead, but i cant use steel in my old wingmaster because it is too old and the chok cant handle the shot. any thoughts?

Steel is not really the "standard over lead", it is the least expensive non toxic shot, and therefore is legal to use on waterfowl. Due to the cost of other non-toxic shells, even for reloaders, I would recommend that you get a gunsmith to ream existing choke to light-modified and use steel shot. For the cost of tungsten matrix or bismuth ammo for a season, you could buy a new 870. Failing that, look for a replacement barrel that is steel shot friendly!

Possibly bismuth......if it's just a choke issue you should be fine with bismuth.

Have you priced Bismuth lately (if you can find it). I agree with Ben H. Take it to a Smith and open the Choke and make sure it's ok to shoot steel.

He asked if there was an alternative to steel safe for his gun and I offered one...sheesh. If he'd of asked if there was a way to shoot steel from his gun, I would have answered as Ben did. You really need to pause a moment before jumping all over everything I post and read the original question. It is getting a bit tiresome.....you shotgun geeks really are a different bunch.

I agree that Ben has a way better idea too but a question was asked and I answered it.......:confused:

Maybe try picking your nose instead of at everything I post.:bangHead::rolleyes:

BTW, bismuth is readily available once again. Pinnacle Ammunition is loading it using the same components as Bismuth Cartridge. But I'm sure an expert like yourself was well aware of that.

"Sheesh" Haven't heard that in a while. And I didn't jump all over your post. Don't flatter yourself  I just offered another alternative, as Ben H. did.

I guess the fact that you've heard it before suggests there could be a problem. Maybe you are confused about how the interweb messageboards work....when you quote someone in a response, it means you are responding to their post.......hopefully that helps you avoid this situation in the future.

Quote the original poster if you want to respond to their post. Pretty simple but it can be confusing for some....:rolleyes:

I quoted your post because you suggested Bismuth as an alternative to steel (to expensive). I also agreed to Ben H's post on opening up the choke. "Pretty simple for some". That time I quoted you again... Is there a reason you are so hostile? Got the G-string on backwards again? :)

Happy Happy

Hey lads, can I join the fun? I just can't resist when everyone's having such a good time!

Shotguns are the kinds of things you need lots of, one way to get around that is either at least three choke tubes in a choke tube barrel or as well described above, another barrel for steel. It's like a well-equipped tool box, you need the tools to do different jobs. And besides, it's just fun!

All the best to you each and all in '09

Two things. It is too and not to:D

Your G-string remark has left a lasting impression on me that I will never get over:dancingbanana: Now everytime I see him or one of his posts, that image will be on my mind. How can I take a person like that serious?

There are quite a few 870 barrels for sale on Ellwood Epps' site.
That would be the simple solution.
Nice shot is a new alternative, but pretty expensive to load.

Unless you like to handload and mess with custom wads . etc, I would go with a replacement barrel with steel compatable remchokes....

You are so right! Win/64, I am sorry for pointing out that there were 2 os in too! I guess with spelling I need to pick the log out of my own eye before suggesting that I can help you pick the speck out of yours.

Right you are....I just get tired of the peanut gallery occasionally....let's all hold hands and sing Kumbaya!

I should just rely on the ignore button rather than a sharp tongue.
