I just bought a baikal MP-153 shotgun. I was reading the manual and it says to break it in with 100 rounds of 1 1/4 oz loads MINIMUM. Is there a particular reason for breaking it in with heavy loads?

I only bought the gun because it was cheap, and I figured I'd give it a shot, even though I wanted something in 3" instead of 3.5" as I had planned to use 2 3/4" and 3" shells mostly. Most of the ammo I have is 2 3/4" 1 1/8oz low brass. I have a hundred or so high brass but most of it is also 1 1/8oz. I have maybe 30 rounds total of suspected 1 1/4oz (not even sure about this, its winchester "high velocity" #5).

Do I need to go out an buy a bunch of pricy ammo to break in my gun? Or can I shoot more of the lighter stuff for the same effect?

Start with the heaviest loads you have (1 1/4). Then, shift to the high brass 1 1/8. Then, use the lighter ones. If all of them cycle fine you have broken in your gun. If not, then go and buy some of the heavy stuff and repeat the process. I would recommend a box or 2 of the cheapest 3' shells you can find.
